Buying organic or locally grown foods is fast becoming an easier choice.

Is the extra expense for organic food worth it? Many consumers believe organic foods serve as a preventive measure against health risks. And because organic farming emphasizes the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water, organic foods have appeal for widespread environmental concerns.

Thousands of families without income aren't participating in the state's welfare program; some say it's too daunting, but other participants say it's easy to navigate.

Stung by recent findings that far more families who may be eligible aren't enrolled in the program, the state is revamping W-2 to make it easier to understand and ensure those struggling aren't improperly turned away.

Avian Influenza is continuing to devastate the Mexican poultry industry with some reports stating that two million birds have now been destroyed.

According to the last notification report of the OIE dated 28th February, there are 11 reported outbreaks in the Guanajuato region with over 1 million susceptible birds confirmed. Nhu Huynh, a clinical oncology nutritionist who works with Chef Jack Shoop at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America facility in the Northeast, recommends a diet high in lean proteins, fruits and vegetables for everybody.

For cancer patients, Huynh prefers baking, boiling or grilling foods, because digesting fried foods requires extra enzymes that may be deficient in a patient's system. Nutrient-rich soups and smoothies also are easier on a delicate digestive system.

Yesterday Whole Foods called the nation's raw milk providers to inform us that as of today, Saturday March 13 at 8 am, they will be removing all raw milk from their shelves. Their actions make it seem like a health emergency, and it is not.

This is not a safety issue. Our wholesome and delicious raw milk is still available at local stores throughout CA. As a very large corporation, Whole Foods must respond to the decisions of their board of directors.

I want to eat cows. I want to eat ribs, burgers, steaks and even bottom round roast (the butt). I would love to swim in the fluffy meat pillows of steak goodness, indulging my continuously growing gluttony.

For the typical family of suburbia, waking up at 7 a.m. to go to work, grabbing a convenience-laden breakfast burrito from McDonald's with a side of coffee water is second nature. I get it. Do I care what you eat? No. I couldn't care less, and the last thing I want to do is make you feel guilty. But, what you eat effects what I eat.

Wayfaring Chocolate

My world briefly shuddered on its axis today. For a few hours, I seriously considered trading in my chocolate habit.

Chocolove's new Almonds and Sea Salt in Dark Chocolate bar, which is in fact so new that it is not yet listed on the website. Despite being only 55%, and therefore a far sweeter chocolate base than I'd usually pick, I adore this chocolate.

My oldest daughter surprised me by saying how much she enjoys using her slow cooker, which is a kitchen appliance I associate with my mother, who called it her crock pot.

So, it shouldn't have surprised me to come across a cookbook titled "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook," by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann, while I was browsing for a birthday present for her. There is actually a series of books offering hundreds of recipes for "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker."
