After watching several documentaries about our food supply and learning just how deficient in nutrients the food we consume has become over the past 30-years, our family has decided to make some serious changes. We are buying organic, eating in season and buying locally. Our meat is grassfed, our bread in homebaked and I feel good about what my family is eating.

On the way to the screening, I picked up a pack of Doritos. How's that for defiance? Here's why. Look at the package: Doritos with cheese is made with whole corn and vegetable oil; so far so good.

One cannot help feeling guilty for consuming this after seeing Jean-Paul Jaud's documentary, "Food Beware," whose subject matter is more accurate in its French title, "Nos enfants nous accuseront," or "Our children will accuse us." Why does Jean-Paul Jaud believe organic food is so necessary that he's ready to start a revolution to get French kids to insist on it?

A man was jailed for over two years today for selling "organic" products that turned out to be nothing of the sort.

Neil Stansfield, the 41-year-old director of One Food Limited, also received a six-year directorship ban for the fraud. An investigation by Trading Standards officers revealed that Stansfield, along with his wife and the firm's operations manager, bought non-organic ingredients from supermarkets, and had employees repackage them before they were sold to consumers across the UK.

A new review from France has concluded that there are nutritional benefits to organic produce, on the basis of data compiled for the French food agency AFSSA.

The conclusion opposes that of a UK study published last month. Whether or not organic food brings nutritional benefits over conventional food has been a matter of considerable inquiry and debate. The issue came to a head last month when a study commissioned by the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) concluded that there is no evidence of nutritional superiority.

On July 26, with a brief article, the Sacramento Bee broke the story that Nestle Waters is coming to Sacramento. A glowing article in the Business Journal and a critical article in the News and Review followed, and then the story was mostly forgotten.

Nestle claims that their Sacramento plant will be a "micro-bottling plant," bottling only 50 million gallons of water. Nestle has fought for the last 6 years, without success, to establish a bottling plant in the town of McCloud, California. While rumors abound that Nestle is abandoning their plans for McCloud, the company has indicated that it all depends on what happens in Sacramento.

Organic food has entered the mainstream with strong growth in all sectors over the past decade, including packaged and prepared foods and beverages, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

American producers are struggling to meet robust demand for organic foods despite dire predictions for the organic sector during the economic downturn. "Consumers prefer organically produced food because of their concerns regarding health, the environment, and animal welfare, and are willing to pay the price premiums established in the marketplace," the department said.

Is there a problem in our food supply? Most people would hazard to guess that yes, there are more issues now than in the past several decades. And they would be correct. So how has this happened?

That's where it gets a bit more tricky. What has changed in the past twenty years in the food chain? Aside from the tremendous increase in imports, the FDA and the USDA have begun to implement HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans) instead of literal inspections on processing plants.

Stop eating dangerous genetically modified (GM) foods! That's the upshot of the Lyme Induced Autism (LIA) Foundation's position paper, released today (August 25, 2009).

The patient advocacy group is not willing to wait around until research studies prove that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cause or worsen the many diseases that are on the rise since gene-spliced foods were introduced in 1996.

For Fredricka Gilje, eating organic foods makes sense for a lot of reasons, but the best one is the simplest: They taste good.

Anyone who has eaten homegrown vegetables knows how they pop with flavor compared with veggies trucked in from elsewhere. But are organic foods actually better for you?

Advances in agricultural technology-including, but not limited to, the genetic modification of food crops-have made fields more productive than ever. Farmers grow more crops and feed more people using less land.

To purchase genetically modified seeds, a customer must sign an agreement that limits what can be done with them. (If you have installed software recently, you will recognize the concept of the end-user agreement.) Agreements are considered necessary to protect a company's intellectual property, and they justifiably preclude the replication of the genetic enhancements that make the seeds unique. But agritech companies such as Monsanto, Pioneer and Syngenta go further.
