A former NYPD Detective testified last week that he regularly saw police plant drugs on innocent people as a way to meet arrest quotas.

Ex-Detective Stephen Anderson, who worked in the Queens and Brooklyn South narcotics divisions, was called to testify in the trial of Brooklyn South narcotics Detective Jason Arbeeny, who has been charged with falsifying public documents and business records. Mister Anderson's testimony was intended to reveal that, as the Daily News puts it, cop corruption wasn't limited to a single squad. In fact, it's pretty widespread! Anderson was busted for helping plant cocaine, a practice known as "flaking," on four men in a Queens bar in 2008. He testified yesterday that he did it to help out fellow officer Henry Tavarez, whose "buy-and-bust" arrests had been low.

Monsanto's fourth-quarter results beat Wall Street expectations. But the company says it has to restate the last two year's earnings because of a federal investigation into its herbicide sales.

A significant part of who we are is defined by the microflora of our digestive systems. If it's changed, even in the smallest way, by genetically modified foods, then we are changed. It's happening now. It's not science fiction.

We have strong evidence from a single study-published eight years ago-that the very nature of what we are is being tampered with by GM foods. Direct, horizontal, transfer of genes from one bacterial organism to another is well documented. We know that it happens in the human gut. Our relationship with gut bacteria is symbiotic. Changes in those bacteria can have long-ranging effects, including on the mind.

Pet food made from wholesome living foods is promoted by the American Pet Products Association, but you should be careful when buying these kinds of pet food.

Consumers are sparing no expense in their pet food purchases these days, and it seems the trend toward more expensive pet diets is here to stay. If you feed a commercial pet food, I recommend you learn all you can about ingredient labels and the quality of various brands. Don't leave it up to pet food companies and marketers to sell you on a particular type of food, nor should your choices be dictated solely by what your dog or cat likes to eat.

In commentary published online today by the British Medical Journal, public health activists call for a global campaign to reduce salt consumption.

The commentary's basis is the idea that the question "is not whether to reduce salt intake but how to do so." Unfortunately, these overzealous do-gooders overlook a mountain of research indicating that the question is still quite open. Two studies published in past three months examine whether reducing salt would have any positive effects and indicate that indiscriminate sodium reduction might actually have negative health consequences.
