Meridian -- Christmas is in the air at Wesley House Community Center as preparations are under way for the facility's holiday ministries.

The community center has kicked off its annual holiday assistance program and applications will be accepted through Dec. 5, said Ginger Grissom Stevens, Wesley's executive director, adding that it is important that those in need of assistance sign up. Last year, more than 5,000 families were helped.

This promotion is part of Starbucks "Great Start for Great Teachers," and is now open to all teachers. HSLDA intervened when we were alerted that homeschool parents were not included in the promotion.

Twenty food companies have told a consumer group that they won't use milk or meat from cloned livestock. The pledge only applies to cloned animals; not products from clones' offspring.

Other companies, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Tyson Foods Inc., have also banned the use of cloned animals in food products. Many haven't made a similar pledge to avoid using food from the conventionally bred offspring of clones, however, partly because no one is tracking the offspring.

McDonald's, home of kids' Happy Meals and the Big Mac, has been cited by a boycott campaign for sponsoring conferences at which homosexuals are trained to be activists, according to the American Family Association.

"First, the company paid $20,000 to become a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and to have a seat on the board of directors. Next, McDonald's refused a request to remain neutral in the culture war by choosing to promote the gay agenda. Then McDonald's accused those opposing the gay agenda, including same-sex marriage, of being motivated by hate," the AFA's alert said.

Whole Foods Market said Monday it would tighten oversight of its suppliers to keep substandard products out of stores, after recalling ground beef that apparently sickened customers in two states.

Scrambling to contain the fallout from a recall that threatens the chain's reputation for quality, Whole Foods acknowledged that it had failed to catch an important change made by one of its suppliers of ground beef, Coleman Natural Beef.
