Consumers hear and read about organic farming but they are not always sure what that means. They sometimes question what 'makes' food organic - and why it is more expensive than other foods.

They may be puzzled by the typically higher cost of these foods, wondering why this should be so as the benefits of such foods may be perceived as being not worth the extra expense. Essentially, organic food is any food product that is grown in organically-certified land without any chemical treatments - either in the form of fertilizers or pesticides.

Thirty countries have already experienced food riots this year. Tens of millions of people are being pushed into abject poverty and starvation. And to a large degree, this crisis is man-made -- the result of misguided energy and farm policies.

Some nonconventional media outlets even point the finger directly at the similarities between our current situation and previous man-made famines for the end purpose of mass genocide and calculated population control. In spite of what you have likely heard, a large shift to organic agriculture -- which by definition is non-GM -- could not only protect and improve the environment, but help end world hunger too.

Starbucks, the Seattle-based coffee company, has announced that it is closing 600 of its 6,800 U.S. stores and laying off more than 12,000 employees. During the past year, the stock has dropped nearly 50 percent.

What went wrong at Starbucks? The fact that Americans are dumping their habit of buying overpriced coffee comes as no surprise at this point in time. With the dollar in freefall, increased unemployment, and rising gas and food prices, most people have started to realize the importance of financial restraint, and planning further than their next paycheck.

"The organic food industry is surprisingly resilient in an economic downturn," explains Benjamin Shepard, contributing editor with Personal Finance.

He adds, "Mainstream retailers and your corner grocer have been embracing the trend, devoting an ever-growing amount of shelf space to organic foods." Investigators had a "significant break" in tracking the salmonella outbreak when they found the bacteria on a jalapeno pepper imported from Mexico at a Texas food supplier, the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday.

The FDA has discouraged all consumers from eating raw jalapeno peppers. The FDA also warned consumers not to eat fresh jalapenos and products made with fresh jalapenos. The discovery may provide a clue to the source of a recent outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul. The bacteria have sickened more than 1,200 people in 42 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

You're itching to get home after a hard day at work, but that carton of milk you emptied onto your cereal this morning must be replaced. You pull into the parking lot of your favorite neighborhood supermarket, determined to simply go in and get out.

Entering the store, you make a beeline to the dairy section -- all the way in the back. Opening the cooler door, you select the milk-fat percentage you desire from the shelf nearest your elbow. Heading for the cashier, you remember that you're about to run out of paper towels. Tucking a roll under your arm, you notice that your favorite snack item is on sale, fetchingly arranged at the end of the aisle.
