Hand sanitizer causes the skin to absorb 100 times more of the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA), according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Missouri and published in the journal PLOS ONE.

BPA exposure came from handling receipts printed on thermal paper, the kind typically issued by cash registers. "Our research found that large amounts of BPA can be transferred to your hands and then to the food you hold and eat as well as be absorbed through your skin," lead author Frederick vom Saal said.

The lower your income is, the more difficult it is to be particular about what you feed your family. Food manufacturers that target lower income shoppers with more affordable products tend to include more GMOs and toxic ingredients in their offerings.

This probably isn't an earth-shattering revelation to anyone, but if you feel like experimenting, try to buy a week's worth of healthy food for a family on a budget of, say, $50-75. Food manufacturers that target lower income shoppers with more affordable products tend to include more GMOs and toxic ingredients in their offerings.

Organic rice baby cereal, rice breakfast cereals, brown rice, white rice-new tests by Consumer Reports have found that those and other types of rice products on grocery shelves contain arsenic, many at worrisome levels.

Arsenic not only is a potent human carcinogen but also can set up children for other health problems in later life. Following our January investigation, "Arsenic in Your Juice," which found arsenic in apple and grape juices, we recently tested more than 200 samples of a host of rice products. They included iconic labels and store brands, organic products and conventional ones; some were aimed at the booming gluten-free market.

Rice has long been at the top of the hierarchy in the prepper's pantry. It's inexpensive, a source of energy-boosting carbohydrates and can extend a humble serving of meat to turn it into a meal for a hungry family.

But lately, it seems that rice is falling from favor - and there are a few very valid reasons for that. First of all, the pesticide load on conventionally grown rice is tremendous. PANNA (Pesticide Action Network of North America) identified more than 40 different pesticides on rice grown in California, with 15 of those pesticides on their "bad actors" list - which means that the pesticides have been proven in multiple studies to have negative effects on human beings and/or groundwater systems.

A story in the Los Angeles Times raises disturbing questions about the practice of irrigating California farmland with the wastewater from fracking. Here's what's happening:

In the Kern County program, Chevron's leftover water is mixed with walnut shells, a process the company says extracts excess oil. The water then flows to a series of treatment ponds. The treated water is launched into an eight-mile canal to the Cawelo Water District, where it is sometimes further diluted with fresh water. The water supplies 90 Kern County farmers with about half their annual irrigation water. The program is a good deal for oil companies, which view the water as an expensive nuisance. And it's a bargain for the water districts.

In a study highlighted in California Childen Are Contaminated, researchers analyzed the diets of California children ages two through seven to determine the cancer and non-cancer health effects from food contaminant exposures.

It turns out food may be the primary route of exposure to toxic heavy metals, persistent pollutants, and pesticides. "Though food-borne toxic contaminants are a concern for all ages, they are of greatest concern for children, who are disproportionately impacted because they're still developing and have greater intake of food and fluids relative to their weight. Pediatric problems that have been linked to preventable environmental toxin exposures include cancer, asthma, lead poisoning, neurobehavioral disorders, learning and developmental disabilities, and birth defects."

Good luck distinguishing these Frankenfoods from real, natural food as they flood our supermarkets.

Pigs are currently being genetically modified for the possibility of producing human organs as early as 2013, but that's not their only use. Another variety may eventually end up on our plates. A project called "Enviropig" has inserted genes from mice and E.coli bacteria into pigs to make them process their food more efficiently, potentially reducing their environmental impact.

Whether you eat them or not, do you know what the risks are from eating GMOs?

If you don't know whether or not you're eating genetically modified organisms , you're not alone-at least in the U.S. Despite the many petitions and appeals for state or federal regulations on labeling foods that contain GMOs, none have passed. And that means companies still don't have to disclose whether or not a product includes genetically modified organisms. What's the big deal, you ask?

Egg and poultry groups Tuesday criticized the Agriculture Department's handling of the worst avian flu outbreak in U.S. history, with one Iowa turkey producer charging the response allowed the deadly virus to spread.

At a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing about the bird flu outbreak that has devastated producers in Iowa and 14 other states, Brad Moline, a third-generation turkey farmer from Manson, Iowa, told lawmakers that state and federal officials were slow to sit down with poultry groups to outline how they planned to combat the disease and what would be required of the industry.

I love cheese, and I've yet to really meet a person who doesn't. But finding high quality GMO free cheeses is getting harder.

You probably already know about how most dairy cows in the United States are fed GMO feed, but is there another GMO derived ingredient that could be contaminating even the grass-fed farm cheeses? The answer is sadly YES.
