The White House on Thursday directed the three U.S. agencies that oversee biotech crop products to improve and modernize their regulatory "framework" to boost public confidence in a system that critics call a failure.

The order, announced in a statement by President Barack Obama's Office of Science and Technology Policy, followed demands by consumers, food-related organizations and businesses for tighter U.S. regulation of genetically modified (GMO) crops, amid a nationwide debate over whether they should be labeled. Biotech crops are regulated through the government's "coordinated framework" that involves APHIS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Upset about a federal bill they say would make it harder for consumers to know whether food has been genetically modified, about 20 people rallied outside U.S. Rep. Billy Long's local office Thursday.

Long, a Republican, is one of 68 lawmakers co-sponsoring the "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act," which was introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo, a Republican from Kansas.

Chicken From China Labeled "Made In America"? These chickens will be sold on grocery store shelf in the U.S. with no country of origin labeling.

Yet again another food scandal is among us as the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently agreed to allow four chicken processing plants in China to raise and slaughter their chickens in the U.S., export them to China for processing, and them ship them back to the U.S. These chickens will then be sold on every grocery store shelf in the United States with no country of origin labeling. What's worse is that U.S. inspectors will not be on site at the processing plants in China before the processed chicken will be shipped to the U.S.  Again, chicken from china labeled "Made In America"? This means there will be little to no control over how the cooked chicken is processed in China.

It's hard to go anywhere these days without running into a super-food. From farmers' markets to your local grocery store, shelves are increasingly packed with items like goji berries, chia seeds, kelp and ... sauerkraut?

That's right, sauerkraut. Not a traditional super-food by definition, this stringy, pale product of fermentation is the victim of a serious case of mistaken identity. Not only is sauerkraut really good for you, but it also changed the world. Simple, fermented sauerkraut played an important role in helping prevent scurvy - an affliction known in its day as the scourge of the seas, responsible for an estimated two million deaths between 1500 and 1800 - on sailing ships around the world.

The doctor spun around from the kitchen counter and held up a plastic container filled with bright green mush. "OK!" he said proudly. "I made my baby food!"

At Tulane University's Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, instructors seek to make such experiences the norm for practicing physicians and they're starting with physicians in training at medical schools. Three years since the Tulane School of Medicine opened its culinary medicine program and one year since unveiling its 4,600-square-foot teaching kitchen within the same building as the Whole Foods on Broad Street, its philosophy is spreading across the country.

It is spring now, the perfect time to plant those crops, for homegrown, organic, non GMO and pesticide-free food. Gardening can be done anywhere, even sprouts on the kitchen counter.

Growing your own food does not have to be expensive. In fact, you can re-grow plants from scraps of fruits and veggies in your kitchen.

In a late evening vote on June 10, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to repeal parts of the nation's country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law by a 300 to 131 margin.

"If Congress repeals COOL, then the next time consumers go shopping for a steak or chicken for their families, they won't be able to tell where that product came from," said Chris Waldron, director of the Food Policy Institute at Consumer Federation of America. "That's completely unacceptable. Consumers want more information about their food, not less."

The Sixth Extinction may sound like a cool name for a band, or maybe a zombie flick, but the truth is even scarier: It's the sixth major die out of species on the planet since life began.

The truly scary thing is that instead of being caused by natural events such as asteroid strikes or ice ages, this one is being caused primarily by the actions of one species -- us humans. Not only that, but it is happening in a relatively short time span, a few hundred years, rather than the hundreds of thousands of years these types of things usually span.

First, let me state that I don't walk around with aluminum foil wrapped around my head in an effort to shield my thoughts from the aliens.

And I'm not trying to spread fear or perpetuate a hoax. What I want to do here is present scientific facts explaining exactly why cooking in the microwave is worse than cooking over the traditional cave-man fire, or your GE stove at home. I was instantly skeptical the first time I heard that microwaving your food was bad. I read about a study that measured nutrients in cooked broccoli [1], comparing it cooked on the stove vs. in the microwave oven.

When a doctor told Susan Levin her 4-year-old son, Ben, was autistic, she was shocked. It was October 2007, and autism wasn't mentioned in the media nearly as much as it is today.

"I remember thinking, 'Oh my God. What are we going to do?' " Levin recalls. "Everyone knew autism was a lifelong disorder and couldn't be cured." Levin is part of a growing group of people who are paying more attention to diet - organic, gluten- and casein-free among them - as a way to treat the symptoms of autism and other disorders. So strongly does she believe in the healing possibilities of food that she's now a family wellness coach working exclusively with families of autistic children.
