It used to be that making cheese meant killing cows. Young cows, specifically-a few days old, at most. The stomach of an unweaned calf produces enzymes that turn liquid milk into good, hard, flavorful cheeses like Parmesan and Cheddar.

Today, it is estimated that 80-90% of cheese in the US and UK is made using FPC. The GMO-derived enzyme has been a boon for cheese manufacturing and cheese sales. The US produced about 11-billion pounds of cheese in 2013 alone, thanks in large part to the cost-effectiveness of FPC. The technology has transformed the industry, making it more efficient, more environmentally friendly, and less dependent on animals. It has also fanned the flames of our addiction; today, the average American eats thirty-three pounds of cheese per year, nearly three times the 1970s rate.

Center for Food Safety today expressed strong opposition to Representative Pompeo's newly revised genetically engineered (GE) food labeling preemption bill (H.R. 1599), which now has been greatly expanded to not only prohibit all labeling of GE food.

These new provisions would not only prohibit any future state and local laws, but also undemocratically nullify GE crop regulations that have existed in numerous counties across the country for over a decade. The bill would also further weaken already weak federal regulation of GE crops, while at the same time forbidding local communities from opting to protect their citizens, their farmers, and their environments. The bill draft will be discussed at a House hearing on Thursday.

For decades, extreme environmentalists have tried to remove 1.3 million acres of California farmland from production by depriving farmers of water.

From Merced all the way down to Bakersfield, and on the entire west side of the Valley as well as part of the east side, productive agriculture would end and the land would return to some ideal state of nature. I was stunned by the vicious audacity of their goal - and I quickly learned how dedicated they were to realizing it. Much of the media and many politicians blame the San Joaquin Valley's water shortage on drought, but that is merely an aggravating factor. From my experience representing California's agricultural heartland, I know that our water crisis is not an unfortunate natural occurrence; it is the intended result of a long-term campaign waged by radical environmentalists who resorted to political pressure as well as profuse lawsuits.

Canadian medical marijuana patients can legally use all forms of cannabis, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

Cannabis oil is now legally allowed instead of only dried marijuana flowers, making it easier to infuse food products. The right at stake was described by the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association as the right to personal autonomy in medical decision-making - no matter what medical science may say about the wisdom of the decision, reports Sean Fine at The Globe and Mail.

We suspected it would only be a matter of time before Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) launched his next broadside against supplements. Once again, Durbin and his allies, including Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).

The bill this time is the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), an appropriations bill to fund the military for FY 2016. The House passed its version of the bill in May. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) introduced what is called "an amendment in the nature of a substitute" to create a Senate version of the House-passed bill. The Blumenthal/Durbin amendments were introduced on top of the McCain legislation.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is making the rounds once again, speaking on behalf of those who want to maintain the right to choose whether or not to vaccinate...

"I ate breakfast last week with the president of a network news division and he told me that during non-election years, 70% of the advertising revenues for his news division come from pharmaceutical ads. And if you go on TV any night and watch the network news, you'll see they become just a vehicle for selling pharmaceuticals. He also told me that he would fire a host who brought onto his station a guest who lost him a pharmaceutical account."  So of course this influences the mainstream media to see and cover vaccine issues with extreme bias. But even furthermore, this contaminates anything they say even in regard to depression, erectile dysfunction, mammograms, etc. This is horrible.

Vegans may have had it right all along; while raw, organic milk offers numerous health benefits, a Harvard researcher and pediatrician argues that conventional milk and dairy products alike are a detriment to your health.

As David Ludwig mentioned in his research, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, there have been countless pieces of research concluding the ill effects of sugar-sweetened beverages. The over-consumption of sugar has been tied to obesity, diabetes, inflammatory-related pain, and much more. And because of sugar's negative effects on our health, even the United States Department of Agriculture, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other organizations are recommending against consuming calories from sugary drinks.

News that the world's cancer experts are taking a fresh look at 2,4-D has farm organizations worried.

Any day now, the same body is planning to issue its findings on the weed killer 2,4-D. As weeds have evolved to withstand glyphosate, more farmers are turning to a mixture of glyphosate and 2, 4-D being marketed by Dow as "Enlist Duo" to be used in fields of genetically modified crops (GMOs).

Transparency is sexy. Misleading people, not so much. If you had no idea that ingredients, labeled by the EPA as pesticides, are hiding in your food, you're not alone.

"We need this technology to feed to world," is the marketing cry of the big chemical companies. In truth, they do need this technology to feed the expectations of shareholders, but it turns out that more than one-third of the food produced in the world goes to waste. That amounts to 1.3 billion tons every year, costing us economically. In this country alone, we throw away 96 billion pounds of food every year, or 27 percent of the total amount of available food. That's 3,000 pounds of food a second.
