Regulatory limits on the levels of moulds and toxins present naturally in foods produced from grain crops should be expanded to include so-called "masked mycotoxins," suggest researchers.

The warnings come from researchers based in Italy who explain that 'masked' mycotoxins - that change from harmless to potentially harmful forms of moulds when already in the body - are not currently covered by regulations. Writing in Chemical Research in Toxicology, the team note that many health experts regard mycotoxins as a serious chronic dietary risk factor; ranking them a greater risk than any potential health threats from pesticides or insecticides.

The so-called Monsanto Protection Act signed into law earlier this year caused such an outrage that people around the world are planning to protest the biotech company later this month. Now a United States senator is expected to try and repeal that law.

According to the Huffington Post, Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) plans to introduce an amendment in Washington that would repeal Section 735 from the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013, a provision that has put St. Louis, Missouri-based Monsanto in the sights of environmentalists around the world.

Associated Press reports we should not hold farmers or the ethanol industry responsible for rising food prices.

There are other contributing factors, such as inflation and fuel costs, but we certainly can also include those heavily subsidized ag-fuelers in the blame game, even though AP downplays it...

When it comes to foods, superfoods and even nutritional supplements from China, "organic" is largely a hoax. This is my opinion, of course, but I've been researching the issue quite extensively as the key decision maker for new products.

It's a fact: USDA organic standards place NO LIMITS on levels of heavy metals contamination of certified organic foods. Even further, there is no limit on the contamination of PCBs, BPA and other synthetic chemicals that's allowed in certified organic foods, superfoods and supplements.

In yet another case of labeling tricks and deception where store bought food is concerned, cheese produced in the United States and labeled as "raw" at the healthfood store and specialty shops is anything but.

Organic Valley, the corporate behemoth that has gone to the Dark Side where raw, fresh, organic, health giving grassfed milk is concerned is not surprisingly the worst offender of this loophole in the USDA regulations.
