The race to open Oregon's first online charter school hit a stumbling block recently when the state Department of Education questioned whether such schools are allowed under law. Drakulich estimates the Web Academy would pay for itself because its students not currently on public school rolls would pull in additional state money.

Governor Schwarzenegger this week signed AB 1925, a pro-family bill requiring schools to notify parents when they plan to bring an outside speaker into the classroom to talk about sex education issues.

AB 1925, authored by Assemblyman Ray Haynes, (R-Murrieta) provides parents with more awareness and control over who discusses issues involving sexuality with their children. Beginning January 1, 2005, school districts must send notices to parents at the beginning of the school year about any outside consultants or guest speakers who will come into the classroom to discuss or teach about HIV/AIDS education or sexually related issues.

Six other districts may join the suit: Northshore, Federal Way, Spokane, Everett, Bellingham and Burlington-Edison.

Lake Washington officials say they spent $2.1 million on special education last year, while Issaquah says it spent $2.8 million. The money came from local levies, which are supposed to provide enrichment for students.

Hankin's is one of two landmark cases pending in Pennsylvania courts. In each, home-schooling families are using a new religious freedom law to fight what they see as state interference. Twelve states have recently passed similar laws, putting a potentially powerful tool in the hands of those who educate the nation's 1.1 million home-schooled children.

Chicago plans advanced surveillance

A surveillance system that uses 2,000 remote-control cameras and motion-sensing software to spot crimes or terrorist acts as they happen is being planned for the city.

The high-definition, motorized cameras can rotate 360 degrees and include night-vision capability. They will be mounted on buildings and utility poles across the city. The city is also considering allowing private companies to join the network, for a fee. Officials said the system size is nearly limitless.

Lately, Democratic presidential contender John Kerry has been making laughable attempts to appeal to gun owners, despite his very clear record in favor of gun control.

This would probably be funnier if it weren't for the fact that Bush, too, has a very clear record of undermining the Second Amendment. Most supporters of gun rights seem to be oblivious to this, or at best only dimly aware. Pointing out the failure by Bush to protect the right to bear arms nearly always brings out the question "So you think Kerry would be better?" Obviously only those who agree with Sarah Brady think Kerry would be better on guns, but it would take some considerable effort for Kerry to do worse, as Bush has attacked gun rights in his domestic agenda, by Administration actions in the courts, and in his foreign policy.

This bill provides that children under the care, custody or supervision of the Division of Youth and Family Services, including children placed in resource family homes or in kinship care homes, may not be home-schooled and are required to be enrolled in a public or nonpublic school.

Former Northwest teacher sentenced to one year in jail

A former Northwest High School teacher will spend a year in jail after pleading guilty to trying to lure an underage girl online.

As part of a plea agreement, Adam Goodrow received five years probation after pleading to one count in Wayne County Circuit Court in August. The arrest was part of an Internet sting.

Entrusted with education children, a former Tyler Independent School District substitute teacher was arrested Thursday for the sexual assault of a John Tyler student.

Antigone Overstreet, 39, of Tyler, was arrested by Tyler police after state District Judge Carole Clark issued a warrant, based on a police investigation, for the woman's arrest.
