Vermont lawmakers must act with urgency on their outrage over the deaths of two toddlers this year who were under the watch of the state Department for Children and Families.

The goal is obvious - find a way to better protect Vermont's children from known harmful situations. The path is clear - improve accountability for those charged with the children's welfare. The principle is simple - increase the transparency of the child welfare system to the point where true outside oversight can take place.

A police raid on the home of a Missouri homeschool family involved the use of a Taser and pepper spray. The children were ultimately removed from the home and placed in the custody of social services.

A Nodaway County, Missouri, court has ruled against Sheriff Darren White and Captain David Glidden in the homeschooling family case. The court ruled that the use of a Taser and pepper spray on the mother and father violated the United States Constitution. The police raid was prompted by a social services workers requesting an investigation into the home because it was allegedly "messy." The family complied with the first inspection, but objected when a second visit soon followed.

After years of inaction by the USDA, Cornucopia contracted for aerial photography in nine states, from West Texas to New York and Maryland, over the past eight months.

What they found confirmed earlier site visits: a systemic pattern of corporate agribusiness interests operating industrial-scale confinement livestock facilities providing no legitimate grazing, or even access to the outdoors, as required by federal organic regulations.

More than 700 chefs - including Tom Colicchio, José Andrés, Art Smith and Sam Talbot - are urging members of Congress to support legislation to mandate labeling of genetically modified foods and to oppose efforts to block state GMO labeling laws.

"This is about transparency in the marketplace and preventing consumer deception," agreed Colin O'Neil, director of government affairs at the Center for Food Safety. "Consumers can only make informed decisions when they are given the information to do so. We require labels on everything from juice from concentrate to foods that have been irradiated; why should genetic engineering be any different?"

The world is bound up in a paper money/credit explosion that can only end badly. What it really means is impoverishment for millions of people, most of whom are totally oblivious to the roaring undercurrent.

There is little wisdom in announcing an economic crash after the fact. Yet some people get upset that I continue with ongoing warnings of a coming financial "pandemic." Seeing the probabilities before they happen is the only prediction that is worthwhile. Afterwards is merely reporting the obvious.

Panama fined a US biotechnology company's local facility that "repeatedly violated" the nation's permitting and regulatory laws as it worked to develop the world's first genetically-modified salmon. The 2012 infractions were first made public on Tuesday.

AquaBounty Technologies, a company licensed by the US government to foster what could be the world's first genetically-modified (GM) meat, is carrying out GM-salmon research in Panama. Neither Panama nor the US has given clearance to sell GM salmon, but, if regulators approve its application, AquaBounty may become the first to sell GM meat in the US. "AquaBounty is really out front on this - the current case will set an important precedent," Dana Perls, a food and technology campaigner at Friends of the Earth, told Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency. "From what we know, there are about 35 other genetically modified species in the development pipelines in other companies. So depending on what happens in this case, we'll likely either see a flow of other permits or this will demonstrate that there isn't room on the market for GM meat or seafood."

One of the richest Democrats in Congress is forcing his wife and children to accept government assistance to feed themselves.

Six days after Rep. Alan Grayson was named the 17th richest member of Congress by Roll Call, his wife received an EBT card to help feed herself and their four minor children. They are also enrolled in their schools' free lunch program - and we all know they're not getting very many calories from that.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, California's coast faces a new threat. Oil companies are fracking the ocean floor just offshore - and state and federal officials seem unconcerned or out of the loop about the danger.

On dry land, fracking has been an environmental menace for years from Pennsylvania to Texas to North Dakota. But Californians only recently discovered that oil and gas companies are fracking our state as well, blasting huge volumes of water mixed with toxic chemicals into the earth to release fossil fuels. Now we've learned that oil companies are also fracking the ocean floor. This dangerous process is already happening in federal waters in the Santa Barbara Channel, where an infamous 1969 oil spill polluted our ocean and beaches with millions of gallons of oil, and federal officials recently approved a new fracking project.

As impossible as this should be in America, the land of the free and the home of religious liberty, it is happening as we speak in Idaho, one of the most conservative states in the union.

There, in Coeur D'Alene, ordained ministers Donald Knapp and his wife Evelyn are going to spend 180 days in jail and be fined $1000 a day for politely declining to perform a sodomy-based marriage ceremony.
