Steel yourselves, because this egregious revelation may very well shock you...

A well-meaning but perhaps overly ambitious federal assistance program that offers a taxpayer-subsidized benefit and does not have rigorous eligibility requirements, was fraudulently taken advantage of by millions of people. (I'll pause here a moment to let you recover.) The Wall Street Journal reports that, of the $2.2 billion the federal government spent to provide low-income Americans with phones in 2012 alone, more than 40 percent of the programs recipients never actually proved that they were eligible to receive the benefit.

The Wall Street Journal can barely believe that Barack Obama made $1 trillion in new taxes the cost to Republicans for raising the debt ceiling and making cuts in federal spending.

Obama keeps saying that he has cut taxes, but the Journal reminds people that Obama has raised taxes, too - and in key ways that impact capital. The ObamaCare bill will raise taxes in a number of unpleasant ways, all in support of vast new federal spending and regulatory adventurism, with these just a few of the worst...

Well, why not?  Sexual activity is as voluntary as drinking coffee and going to the gym, and at least the latter has potentially profound implications for long-term health.

While the federal government demands that employers provide free contraception and sterilization to their employees on demand, why not mandate a bunch of goods and services that have beneficial effects? Allysia Finley offers her modest proposal in today's Wall Street Journal in response to the immodest diktat of the Obama administration...

Wrongly convicted: Man who served 25 years sues NYC for $162 mn

A man recently cleared for the 1989 murder of his friend in New York City by producing proof he was in Florida visiting Disney World is seeking $162 million from the city, his lawyer says.

Jonathan Fleming filed a notice of claim on Tuesday, the first move in suing New York City for the wrongful conviction that put him in prison for almost 25 years. "I think this is the first step toward getting him what he rightfully deserves," his lawyer Taylor Koss said, according to AP. The city's comptroller office, which handles such notices, did not comment on Tuesday. Fleming was freed and his conviction lifted in April when the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office said it finally believed Fleming to be innocent.

The widow of Inzer Allen Johnson is filing a wrongful death suit against the Rainbow City Police Department after Johnson was shot by officers on Nov. 17.

The suit, Debra Johnson vs. City of Rainbow City, accuses police of negligence, wantonness, police brutality and excessive force in wrongfully causing Johnson's death. Officers who responded were able to communicate with the man, Jenkins said then. At some point, the man, who still was armed, threatened officers and was shot, Jenkins said at that time. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The attorney for the Johnson family, Julian McPhillips, disputed the account. He said while there was a disagreement at the time, it was about money and was minor.

Two Tennessee men face felony charges for allegedly vandalizing a McDonald's because their order was wrong and they were "cussed out" by the manager.

The Murfreesboro Police Department said Christopher Slate, 21, and Sean Mosey, 23, were charged with felony reckless endangerment and vandalism after they allegedly threw a brick and a piece of concrete through the restaurant's windows early Sunday, The Smoking Gun reported Tuesday.

Straighforwardness has never been more out of control.

"Middle-class families shouldn't pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires," repeatedly proclaims President Obama, arguing for his proposed $1.5 trillion tax increase over the next 10 years. "That's pretty straightforward. It's hard to argue against that." In fact, Mr. Obama's statement is anything but straightforward and not hard to argue against.

Such is The One's personal awesomeness that he can order the bombing of Libya without so much as a heads up to the legislature in advance. Surely he wasn't about to be tripped up by a duly enacted bill that dares to cut off the money he uses for his auxiliary cabinet.
