A New York resident died Thursday after police officers put the man, who was asthmatic, in a choke-hold before apparently slamming his head on the ground

The New York Daily News obtained exclusive video of the incident, which shows Staten Island man Eric Garner, 43, begging officers to let him breathe as he lies on the ground helpless. Now, his family is demanding accountability from the NYPD. Police said Garner, who was a married father of six children, died of a heart attack during the arrest, according to The Associated Press. The NYPD said Garner had been seen selling untaxed cigarettes, and that he had been arrested before for the same offense.

One wonders how long it will be before we start reading stories about people getting arrested merely for coming within eyesight or snapping photos at the entrance gate at one of these off-limits public lands the Administration of President Barack Obama is punitively closing down during the phony Federal government shutdown. A Massachusetts newspaper reported Tuesday on the "Gestapo" treatment locals received at the hands of Federal officers on a vacation trip out to Yellowstone National Park. Unlike earlier reports from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where veterans seemed able to exercise their collective will to thwart Park Service officials who were "guarding" barricaded monuments, these people were actually rounded up and held at gunpoint in a Yellowstone park hotel.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office confirms it queried the Pentagon about a satirical report that Guantanamo detainees will get GI Bill benefits.

The parody appeared in The Duffel Blog, founded in 2012 by a Marine veteran and frequently described as a military version of the satirical news website, The Onion. It quoted a fictitious Defense Department spokesman as saying, "By allowing the detainees to use the Department of Veterans Affairs, we hope to completely crush their souls with bureaucracy" - and included a made-up quote attributed to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, saying his department is prepared to process detainees' GI Bill benefits claims "in 12-15 years as per standard operating procedure."

Just what Washington needs to hear...

Comedian and parody musician Remy sets out to show just how wrong the government's treatment of our veterans has been in recent years. The message is hilarious - but also infuriatingly true. Long wait times and secret lists that result in our nation's heroes dying before they can get medical care - all while the VA spends hundreds of millions on solar panels - isn't right, plain and simple. And it's not going to get better unless we demand that it does.

One thing's for certain: Ixchtel, the Mayan Moon Goddess to which the global warming summit people are praying, is not only wearing her insulated bra and heated underwear in Cancun this week, but she also has a helluva sense of humor.

Don't worry though. When the summit attendees from almost 200 countries fire up their jets to fly home, I'm sure things will warm up just a little.

A family rights group is planning protests on Friday (August 12, 2011) against the child welfare system at courthouses across the nation, including Spokane.

The protests, planned in 42 states and Washington, D.C., are being organized by an Internet-based movement known as Govabuse and will target family courts, child protective services and foster care systems that it says "separate and financially demolish families," according to the organization's website, govabuse.org.

Not that we needed another example, but once again we have one more NBC "star" telegraphing to the world the poisonous leadership style Steve Capus has brought to the NBC Network.

Capus is the President of NBC News and MSNBC. According to the NBC/Universal Website, Capus is also the network's "arbiter of issues involving ethics, style, standards, safety and other matters that affect the Division's journalistic bearing." Which of course is pure nonsense. At NBC News there simply are no standards or ethics, only an environment fostered by Capus that continually allows for the worst kind of divisive race-baiting we've seen in decades.

Sent from the "Grandma Underground," the personal stories included pleas for help from grandparents and other relatives struggling to raise children removed from homes because of abuse, often from parents caught up in the state's drug epidemic.

"She was born a drug baby and has a lot of medical problems and suffers many withdrawal attacks," wrote Teresa Grider, a grandmother from Elizabethtown, describing the youngest of five grandchildren she's raising. "If you was ever to see one, it would make tears come to your eyes as it does me."

As Anthony Watts wrote earlier, where there's a need for immunity, there is or is going to be a crime.

Naturally one of the first things that must be done by any movement that purportedly has the best interest of the people in mind is to make sure those people have no legal recourse against the ones who are saving the planet...

"If environmentalists are going to get results in their push for clean energy, they need to pipe down about climate change and speak up about national security and job creation" --Arnold Schwarzenegger

Er, that's not even selective memory. More like amnesia. I understand the part about running from your Plan A -- after all, this very marching order first came from pollster Stanley Greenberg and led to John Kerry saying of his cap-and-trade bill "This is not an environment bill" (oddly, it amended the Clean Air Act, granted power to EPA, mentions 'environment' 97 times, 'climate' 220 times, 'greenhouse' 650 more times...but, hey, the pollster said say something else!).
