A white nationalist rally that turned violent in Charlottesville, Va., on Aug. 12 brought renewed attention to dozens of Confederate monuments around the country.

Many government officials, including Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader, have called to remove statues, markers and other monuments that celebrate controversial Civil War era figures from public grounds. There are likely hundreds of such monuments in the United States.

Trump's proposal to overhaul the U.S. food stamp program, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as it's currently known, has brought with it a widely overlooked fee that could end up costing food retailers billions.

The Office of Management and Budget said the fee would be assessed when stores sign up and would require renewal after five years. The budget office said the amount would depend on the size and type of retailer, but the president's budget estimates that the fee would generate $2.4 billion in revenue over the next decade.

"What basically seems to have happened - aluminium was not bioavailable, traditionally, in the world's biota until the Industrial Revolution, and so, it just had no place in any biochemical reaction that was normal."

"It shows up in so many products. Again, it's great stuff to make airplanes and computers out of, but it shows up in our food, it shows up in our water, it shows up in our air, it shows up in our medicines, including vaccines, it shows up in our antacids, and various things we take into our bodies. So we increasingly have this compound that is not part of any normal biochemical process, on Earth, for anything, that now can only go in and do havoc, which is exactly what it does. It causes all kinds of unusual biochemical reactions in the body, including in the brain."

A bill authored by California Senator Tom Berryhill, R-Twain Harte, to promote fishing for all Californians unanimously passed the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee on Tuesday.

Currently, fishing licenses are based on a calendar-year cycle, with no extra time or prorated rates given for purchases made later in the season. SB-187, which is supported by groups representing nearly every type of Californian, would make fishing licenses valid for 12 months from the time of the purchase.

A Democratic-sponsored bill that would set goals for reducing Texas child welfare workers' caseloads is laudable but needs more careful consideration, two key Republican writers of House social services policy said Monday.

Houston Democratic Rep. Armando Walle's measure would double-down on state GOP leaders' recent approval of 829 new positions at beleaguered Child Protective Services. The bill would encourage CPS to hire 893 more employees over the next two years and create an additional 825 slots at sister agencies such as Adult Protective Services, Child Care Licensing and the unit that operates the protective services department's hotline for reporting abuse, the Legislative Budget Board has estimated.

After recently withdrawing her son from public school because of safety and education concerns, a New York City mom went through all the required procedures to homeschool her son, but soon found Child Protective Services (CPS) coming after her.

Before CPS showed up at her door and prior to seeking legal advice, the concerned mother received counsel and support from her pastor and his wife - both of whom had homeschooled their own children for years.

Theirs was a spiritual journey of getting back to nature and rejecting the materialism that they felt held them in bondage. Christian and Danielle Holm began their journey together in early 2016 as itinerant missionaries, traveling across the country.

The last thing that they expected was for Child Protective Services to seize their 1 day old baby literally off of his mother's breast in an Alabama hospital. What started out as an apparent case of mistaken identity has turned into a nightmare that the family cannot wake up from. They don't understand why their baby was taken from them, or why he still remains in state custody in foster care while social workers continue to challenge their religious beliefs.
