$2 million in gems, gold stolen from Calif. museum

California investigators searched Monday for thieves who made off with an estimated $2 million in precious gems and gold from a Central Valley museum during a brazen daytime robbery.

But they didn't get away with the biggest prize of all - the nearly 14-pound Fricot Nugget, a giant crystalline gold mass unearthed in the Gold Rush era. During their attempt to grab the rock, the robbers triggered an alarm that alerted authorities who swarmed the museum but were unable to nab the thieves. At least two robbers wearing hoods and armed with pickaxes threatened workers during the heist Friday at the California Mining and Minerals Museum in Mariposa, the California Highway Patrol said. No suspects have been identified.

$2.4 Trillion Would Be Largest Debt-Limit Increase in U.S. History

The bill to increase the federal debt limit...would increase that limit by up to $2.4 trillion, which would be the largest increase in the debt limit in U.S. history by a margin of half a trillion dollars, according to the CBO and CRS.

In fact, according to records published by the Congressional Research Service, if the current bill is passed and the debt limit is increased by $2.4 trillion, the two largest debt-limit increases in U.S. history would come in back-to-back years, both during the presidency of Barack Obama. Up until now, the largest increase in the debt limit was the $1.9 trillion increase passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on Feb. 12, 2010. That law increased the debt limit from $12.394 trillion to $14.294 trillion.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the least expensive (in dollars) Obamacare health insurance plan in 2016 will be $20,000 per year for a family of five. The cost in health is immeasurable.

Buried within the dozens of pages of typical government argle bargle, parenthetical references and doublespeak are examples for Americans to use to determine their "penalty" for not being on an Obamacare-approved plan. A pair of assistant principals at a New York school were each fined $25,000 for keeping more than $20,000 worth of theme park tickets meant for students.

City officials said Assistant Principal Richard Gilberto and Assistant Principal Derric Borrero of IS 24 kept the Great Adventure tickets, which were each worth $64.19 but marked "complimentary," after they were donated to the school for use by students, the New York Post reported Thursday.

$253.5B-Obama Borrowed Nearly 6x as Much in February as Sequester Cuts All Year

During the month of February--as President Barack Obama was warning Americans they would see dramatic effects in their lives if "sequestration" of some planned federal spending kicked in--the federal government's debt climbed by $253.5 billion.

That one-month increase in the debt was nearly six times as much as the $44 billion in spending cuts the Congressional Budget Office estimates will take place in all of fiscal 2013 as a result of sequestration. At the close of business on Jan. 31, 2013, the federal debt was $16,433,791,850,294.04, according to the U.S. Treasury. At the close of business on Feb. 28, 2013, the federal debt was $16,687,289,180,215.37. Thus, the federal debt increased $253,497,329,921.33 during the month.

$3.4B settlement objector petitions Supreme Court

A woman who challenged a $3.4 billion settlement between the U.S. government and Native American land trust beneficiaries is asking the Supreme Court to take up her case.

Kimberly Craven's attorney filed a petition with the Supreme Court Monday. Attorney Anand Ramana said Wednesday he does not expect to know for months whether the justices will take up the case. Craven says the settlement pits Native American plaintiffs against each other.

$300 million taxpayer investment in Solyndra sold for ... $90.3 million

In 2009, the Obama administration approved a set of loan guarantees to Solyndra that totaled over $520 million, which supposedly would have created thousands of new jobs.

Most of that money, $300 million, went to build a new manufacturing plant for the solar panels that cost more to build than the market price they could fetch. For some reason, the Department of Energy and the White House found this to be a solid business model. Eventually, the company went bankrupt despite an effort by the Obama administration to bring new cash into Solyndra - by illegally subordinating taxpayer standing in event of a collapse. The bankruptcy continued to unwind this week with the sale of the new facility. The $300 million facility managed to go for 30 cents on the dollar...

In a stinging rebuke to local school officials, a Mendocino County jury Thursday awarded $4.25 million to the grieving parents of a 13-year-old boy who drowned at the city pool during a 2003 swimming class. The jury, which took less than 90 minutes to reach its unanimous verdict, awarded Sandy and Joe Talamo $250,000 more than their attorneys had sought.
