A new study of Medicare cost data completed in June by the well-known Washington, DC-based firm Muse & Associates helps prove the cost-saving impact that chiropractic care has on the current federal Medicare program.

The study, titled "Utilization, Costs, and Effects of Chiropractic Care on Medicare Program Costs," was commissioned by the ACA and is the first study of its type to compare the global, per capita Medicare expenditures of chiropractic patients to those of non-chiropractic patients receiving care in the federal Medicare program. The study utilizes data obtained from Medicare's Standard Analytical Files for 1999--the most recent year cost data is available for analysis. The study's executive summary states: "The results strongly suggest that chiropractic care significantly reduces per beneficiary costs to the Medicare program. The results also suggest that Chiropractic services could play a role in reducing costs of Medicare reform and/or a new prescription drug benefit."

This is a heretofore unseen experiment on the Europeans. Of the 25 million German citizens to be vaccinated in the first stage, close to 250,000 could suffer a serious reaction to the vaccine.

It is only too convenient for drug companies when new vaccines and production processes to combat swine flu are tested on millions of Europeans. Indeed, instead of having to pay for testing, the drug companies stand to profit handsomely from this approach.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Each year the USDA deploys hundreds of thousands of rabies oral vaccination baits to help stop the spread of this infectious disease. And on Monday, baits were spread across Northern New York, including all of St. Lawrence.

The baits are only a little bigger than a quarter. It's encased by a block of fish or dog meal with a packet of liquid vaccine inside. "When the animal bites into the packet it releases the liquid and they swallow it and become vaccinated in that manner," says Barney.

The U.S. government asked scientists Tuesday not to reveal all the details of how to make a version of the deadly bird flu that they created in labs in the U.S. and Europe.

The lab-bred virus, being kept under high security, appears to spread more easily among mammals. That's fueled worry that publishing a blueprint could aid terrorists in creating a biological weapon, the National Institutes of Health said. But the NIH said it was important for the overall findings to be published in scientific journals, because they suggest it may be easier than previously thought for bird flu to mutate on its own and become a greater threat.

The once eliminated disease of measles is making a comeback in the United States thanks to our lax immigration policy, according to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and the American Red Cross.

Recent measles cases in four states - California, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Iowa - highlight the growing number of unvaccinated adults and children living in the United States as well as the need to control the global spread of the disease. Last year, the number of reported measles cases in the United States more than doubled (63, on average, to 140 total in 2008).

In an effort to modernize vaccine production while preparing for an influenza pandemic, the US government today awarded five contracts totaling more than $1 billion to develop cell-based technologies for making flu vaccines.

The awards to five pharmaceutical companies are intended to help create an alternative to growing flu vaccines in eggs, the time-consuming production method used since the 1950s, and boost US production capacity. The money comes from $3.3 billion Congress appropriated last December for pandemic preparations by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS listed the vaccine makers and their contract awards as follows: GlaxoSmithKline, $274.75 million; MedImmune, $169.6 million; Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics, $220.51 million; DynPort Vaccine, $40.97 million; and Solvay Pharmaceuticals, $298.59 million.

Glaxo Smith Kline expects to book further big orders for the H1N1 flu vaccine it is developing, pointing to higher earnings for the company in 2009.

Countries around the world are seeking to build up stockpiles of vaccine to deal with a likely flu pandemic caused by the new H1N1 strain, also known as swine flu. Analysts believe strong demand for both vaccines and Relenza will boost earnings at the British-based drugmaker in 2009.

It is once again the season of influenza, and the push is on to "get your flu shot." But does this hallmark of Western medicine really provide the protection health experts claim it does?

A recent study out of the University of Minnesota (UM) suggests not, having found that the two groups most at risk from developing serious complications from the flu, seniors and children, derive little or no benefit from getting flu shots. Michael Osterholm from the UM Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy analyzed more than 12,000 peer-reviewed studies, documents, transcripts, and notes dating back to the 1930s, and found that there was very little solid evidence that the flu shot provides any real protection for most people. As it turns out, those at highest risk of suffering from the flu are least likely to derive any benefit from flu shots, especially because flu strains are constantly morphing and becoming more virulent.
