University of Utah researchers believe they know the general area where one gene that causes autism may lie. But they need the help of families with at least one member who has the behavioral disorder.

The researchers used DNA from thousands of genes to conclude that a region on chromosome 3 probably is home to a gene causing autism. The scientists reached that conclusion by tracing variations in the DNA of a multi-generational Utah family that has an unusually high occurrence of autism. They looked at 31 members of the family, which is of Northern European descent and all descended from one couple. Seven of those members have autism or a related disorder.

Our 2 year old was bit by a dog about a month ago, minor cut, was OK 5 minutes later. The dog was more or less playing with him, not seriously attacking our son.

My wife, in her infinite wisdom, called our pedi and apparently scared her badly. She wanted to schedule an appointment, but I canceled it since there was no reason. It was a tiny scratch that has since healed. Well the pedi got mad and turned us over to CPS.

A tuberculosis outbreak in western Alabama has killed three adults, the state department of public health confirmed on Thursday. Since January 2014, 26 patients were diagnosed, four of which are children.

The infection rate in the town of Marion is greater than those in many third world countries, public health officials said. "This is a case rate of 253 per 100,000 population in the town of Marion. This far exceeds the TB case rate of 2.5 per 100,000 in the whole state of Alabama in 2015," the department stated in a media release.

BOISE - At least one Treasure Valley health expert is warning against adults hosting parties that intentially infect children with chicken pox.

They're called pox parties and children with chicken pox are invited to hang out with kids who haven't caught the disease yet. Some parents think intentionally exposing kids to chicken pox at a young age does less harm than if they catch it naturally at an older age.

Remember when the FDA said VIOXX was safe? It's not, many died, thousands had strokes (my brother included); this "safe" drug was pulled and lawsuits burned up the Xerox machines.

Treachery is defined as: violation of faith; betrayal of trust. That's exactly what's been happening in this country for decades: treachery by career politicians whose favors have been bought by the big pharmaceutical companies who have betrayed the trust of those they claim to want to help, when in dozens of cases they knew their product was dangerous, but pushed for passage by the FDA for mega billions.

SAN DIEGO, California - Many Americans are not getting the recommended vaccines before traveling to avoid infections such as measles and hepatitis A, according to two new studies.

Lack of vaccination was due to both provider (52%) and patient (48%) decisions. Providers most frequently deemed the vaccination "not indicated" because of the itinerary or referred the patient to a primary care provider. Patients often refused vaccination because they were not concerned about illness, the study authors report.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I spent most of the pregnancy worried about and trying to plan for a great natural birth. All the "mothering" stuff after that I just didn't even think about.

I read one baby book though, the Dr Sears classic, "The Baby Book" and thought briefly about vaccines and delayed vaccinations. When I talked to my child's pediatrician though she kind of brushed off the idea of splitting up the schedule and I ended up just going along with everything as recommended by the "experts." I proceeded obediently according to schedule until my son was around 18 months old. By this time my husband was in Chiropractic college and I was surrounded by non-vaccinating folks who questioned my choice to just go with the flow. I persisted though. I didn't want my baby to get sick. But when I took him in for his well baby visit around this time he got a shot that changed my thoughts on the subject.
