C.D.C. Closes Anthrax and Flu Labs After Accidents

After potentially serious back-to-back laboratory accidents, federal health officials announced Friday that they had temporarily closed the flu and anthrax laboratories at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The CDC also halted shipments of all infectious agents from the agency's highest-security labs. The accidents, and the CDC's emphatic response to them, could have important consequences for the many laboratories that store high-risk agents and the few that, even more controversially, specialize in making them more dangerous for research purposes. If the CDC - which the agency's director, Dr. Thomas Frieden, called "the reference laboratory to the world" - had multiple accidents that could, in theory, have killed both staff members and people outside, there will undoubtedly be calls for stricter controls on other university, military and private laboratories.

The amended version of AB2109, was passed by the Senate and is back over to the Assembly side for a vote on whether the Assembly agrees with the Senate changes.

Don't be fooled by Dr. Pan's senate amendment to add school nurses to the short restricted list of providers allowed to sign off on the exemption form. Parent's shouldn't have to get permission from anyone for these decisions, let alone a provider who already philosophically disagrees with them. This is bullying and harassment. Making things even worse, Dr. Pan and his supporters have been misleading legislators to try and shove this bill through. For example, he keeps referring to a supposedly rarely used complaint hotline set up in Washington state to complain about providers who won't sign the exemption there. The health department in Washington tells NVIC that they have never heard of it and doesn't think it even exists! In addition, Pan and his supporters are telling legislators the Washington bill requiring a provider signature has lowered the number of personal belief exemptions there. What Pan IS NOT TELLING legislators is that WA also has a religious exemption that DOES NOT require a provider signature. If you were a parent in WA, which exemption would you pick? California has NO RELIGIOUS exemption.

San Andreas, CA -- Earlier this week the Calaveras County Health Department closed its eight day H1N1 school vaccination program for the year.

Monday vaccination team members made their final stop at Mokelumne Hill, Rail Road Flat and Jenny Lind Elementary schools. Vaccinations were also offered at Jenny Lind Alternative High School.

I've discussed the concept of "misinformed consent" multiple times before. Quacks in general, particularly the "health freedom" movement proclaim their dedication to "informed consent."

Unfortunately, the antivaccine movement has rallied not for AB 2109, but against it. Barbara Loe Fisher, all her protestations for "informed consent" notwithstanding, has issued what is in essence a call to arms to her fellow antivaccinationists to try to defeat the bill. It's full of appeals to "personal freedom," claims that doctors would not sign such forms, and, hilariously, this complaint:

The California legislature is currently considering a bill that would require parents to obtain their doctor's signature on a government form prior to enrollment in public school if they wish to skip one or more vaccines for their child.

Current law allows parents to decline vaccines by signing an exemption form at the school -- no doctor's signature needed. The new law would require "a written statement signed by a health care practitioner that indicates that the practitioner provided the parent with information regarding the benefits and risks of the immunization and the health risks of specified communicable diseases."

The Natomas Unified School District in Sacramento, California is in financial trouble. But when it comes to vaccinations, the sky's the limit. The district is now doing door-to-door vaccinations. Unannounced. And they've taken a news crew with them...

Parents are pressured. Not shown in the video is that they aren't provided information about their right to opt out. If they choose to opt out, they aren't given the exemption forms. No information is given about risks associated with the vaccine. The vaccination in question is Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis), and is one of the most questionable.

Governor Brown's signing of SB277 creates a forced vaccination and sacrifices parental and religious rights and school education.

In order to sign the bill into law, Governor Brown had to abandon his long-standing legislative record as a champion of parental and religious rights and school education. NVIC called him out in a July 1, 2015 letter for failing to protect California families from segregation and discrimination based on vaccination and health care choices that parents make in the best interest of their minor children.

California Minors No Longer Need Parental Okay for HPV Shot

California Governor Jerry Brown on Sunday signed a law widely backed by healthcare professionals to let minors as young as 12 years of age receive a vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV) without their parents' consent.

Dr. Diamond also noted that the new law does not break new healthcare-policy ground. California already permits minors to be tested and treated for sexually transmitted diseases such as HPV infection without parental consent. In addition, they do not need their parents' approval when it comes to obtaining contraceptives, pregnancy testing, prenatal care, and abortions.
