The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday it has approved a new vaccine to prevent seasonal influenza.

Agriflu, made by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, is not intended to protect against the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.

One night inside a George Washington University fraternity, a group of brothers gathered around a pool table, boasting about how no matter what their college, government and parents might say, they don't need any swine flu vaccine, thanks very much.

They view the virus's threat as a media-concocted sensation. They fend off their parents' -- and even their girlfriends' parents' -- worries, much as they do concerns about any other risky behavior, such as parachuting out of an airplane for an upcoming frat event.

U.S. health authorities have made pregnant women one of the highest priority groups for getting the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, but is it actually safe for pregnant women and their babies?

In fact, the package inserts for the swine flu vaccines actually say that the safety of these vaccines for pregnant women has not been established. And miscarriage reports from pregnant women who have taken the H1N1 swine flu vaccine are starting to pour in from all over the nation.

ATLANTA -- Hundreds of thousands of swine flu shots for children have been recalled because tests indicate the vaccine doses lost some strength, government health officials said Tuesday.

The shots, made by Sanofi Pasteur, were distributed across the country last month and most have already been used, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 800,000 pre-filled syringes that were recalled are for young children, ages 6 months to nearly 3 years.

The CDC's big worry is that H1N1 will return with a vengeance in January after college kids come home for the holidays, infecting the rest of their family. They'd like to see those families vaccinated before their germinators return.

And this is a legitimate point. After all, there have a number of documented H1N1 infections that have shown to be resistant to Tamiflu - possibly a sign that the virus is mutating into a drug-resistant bug.

Will Hong Kong have any corresponding measures now that the United States has ordered a recall of the swine flu vaccine?

Secretary for Food and Health: First of all, I think the product recalled in the United States is very different from the one ordered by Hong Kong, although it is produced by the same vaccine company. But this is actually a world-wide company. It has many factories and this product is actually produced in the factory in the United States rather than in France.

When staff members at a Wellesley, Mass., school went to the nurse last Friday, they expected to be injected with a vaccine for theH1N1 flu. What they received instead was a shot of insulin resulting in a bout with low blood sugar.

Such errors have happened before. This past fall, a number of people in the neighboring town of Needham received a seasonal flu vaccine in place of the H1N1 vaccines they were supposed to receive. And in 2007, a teacher in the nearby town of Attleboro also received an injection of insulin instead of the intended flu shot.

Our 2 year old was bit by a dog about a month ago, minor cut, was OK 5 minutes later. The dog was more or less playing with him, not seriously attacking our son.

My wife, in her infinite wisdom, called our pedi and apparently scared her badly. She wanted to schedule an appointment, but I canceled it since there was no reason. It was a tiny scratch that has since healed. Well the pedi got mad and turned us over to CPS.

The editor of The Lancet discusses responsibility for continuing fears about vaccines and autism, after the medical journal retracted its 1998 study's conclusions on the subject.

We used to think that we could publish speculative research which advanced interesting new ideas which may be wrong, but which were important to provoke debate and discussion. We don't think that now. We don't seem able to have a rational conversation in the public space about difficult controversial issues without people drawing a conclusion which could be very averse.
