Getting inoculated for diseases such as whooping cough and measles used to be a childhood rite of passage. Now with shifting parental attitudes about vaccine safety, a growing number of California children are entering kindergarten without shots.

The Watchdog Institute, found that waivers signed by parents who choose to exempt their children from immunizations for kindergarten enrollment have nearly quadrupled since 1990. California allows parents to opt out of some or all shots on the basis of personal beliefs, be it religious objections or distrust of the medical establishment.

Schools with the highest exemption rates tend to be private schools, public charter schools, and traditional public schools in affluent areas. Among schools with 25 or more kindergartners last year, 14 had immunization opt-outs for more than 15 percent of their kindergarten class. The top was the Waldorf School of San Diego in City Heights, at 51 percent.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Monday sent another team to Lucknow to probe the death of four infants who died reportedly after being administered vaccines during an immunisation drive on Saturday.

The teams would ascertain whether the vaccines administered were spurious or expired; or whether there was a procedural lapse while giving the shots by auxiliary nurse midwives or if the cold chain was well-maintained. There was still no clarity about whether the vaccines given were those of anti-measles, BCG or Hepatitis B.

The Supreme Court is trying to sort out whether drug companies can be sued for claims of serious side effects from childhood vaccines without driving vaccine makers from the market and risking a public health crisis.

The court heard argument Tuesday in an appeal filed by Pittsburgh area parents who want to sue Pfizer Inc.'s Wyeth for the serious health problems they say their 18-year-old daughter suffered from a vaccine she received in infancy.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, has claimed the 10th victim in California, in what health officials are calling the worst outbreak in 60 years.

Since the beginning of the year, 5,978 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the disease have been reported in California. All of the deaths occurred in infants under the age of 3 months, says Michael Sicilia, a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health. Nine were younger than 8 weeks old, which means they were too young to have been vaccinated against this highly contagious bacterial disease.

The 12,000-member force reported that at least six U.N. personnel were wounded in protests at Hinche in the central plateau, while local Radio Metropole reported that at least 12 Haitians were injured in Cap-Haitien. The protests apparently began in Cap-Haitien early Monday and within hours had paralyzed much of the northern port city. An APTN television cameraman trying to reach the area was repelled by protesters throwing rocks and bottles from a barricade.

Vaccinations aren't "essential" medical treatments, a family court judge has ruled in refusing a Child Welfare request to order inoculations for four kids. Judge Stephen Lipton, in a written decision released Thursday.

Child Welfare had applied for a ruling to have the siblings immunized despite their parents' decision not to allow the treatment. But Lipton said the four children, ranging in age from one to 12, weren't at any present risk so no court intervention was warranted.

Much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong. So why are doctors-to a striking extent-still drawing upon misinformation in their everyday practice?

In 2001, rumors were circulating in Greek hospitals that surgery residents, eager to rack up scalpel time, were falsely diagnosing hapless Albanian immigrants with appendicitis. At the University of Ioannina medical school's teaching hospital, a newly minted doctor named Athina Tatsioni was discussing the rumors with colleagues when a professor who had overheard asked her if she'd like to try to prove whether they were true-he seemed to be almost daring her. She accepted the challenge and, with the professor's and other colleagues' help, eventually produced a formal study showing that, for whatever reason, the appendices removed from patients with Albanian names in six Greek hospitals were more than three times as likely to be perfectly healthy as those removed from patients with Greek names.

Hey, remember when conservatives objected to the Obamacare federal individual mandate on constitutional grounds and the liberal establishment laughed?

The word of the day: "Void." The constitutional clause of the day: The Commerce Clause. Via Forbes (and remember that more than half of all states are suing to nullify Obamacare and three states - Missouri, Arizona and Oklahoma - rejected the Obamacare mandate via ballot measure)...

Wikileaks exposes Bill Gates' support for Monsanto, the giant biotech company responsible for spreading genetically modified organisms.

The U.S. Department of State has virtually become an agency for promoting the private interests of the Monsanto Corporation. Bill Gates may be one of the most destructive "do-gooders" on the planet because he is rich enough to get what he wants and he has a high opinion of his own intelligence. It is hard enough fighting Big Pharma, Big Government and Big Medicine on vaccines, but when another opponent is one of the wealthiest and most influential philanthropists in the world, it is even harder.
