Whooping Cough Vaccine Loses Strength After Fifth Dose

Children fully inoculated against whooping cough become more susceptible to the disease as the vaccination wanes over time, contributing to outbreaks in the U.S., a study found.

Each year after receiving the fifth dose of the vaccine, children had a 42 percent increased risk of acquiring whooping cough, also known as pertussis, according to research in the New England Journal of Medicine. The vaccine, known as DTaP, which also inoculates against diphtheria and tetanus, is sold in the U.S. by GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) and Sanofi.

During a whooping cough outbreak in California in 2010, immunized children between eight and 12 years old were more likely to catch the bacterial disease than kids of other ages, suggesting that the childhood vaccine wears off as kids get older.

"We have a real belief that the durability (of the vaccine) is not what was imagined," said Dr. David Witt, an infectious disease specialist at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, California, and senior author of the study. Whooping cough, or pertussis, is caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria. The infection produces an intense cough that lasts weeks and can lead to pneumonia, an inability to breathe or death -- although most cases don't reach such extremes.

Canterbury children who have been vaccinated against whooping cough are still catching the disease, a childcare manager says.

Latest figures show the pertussis, or whooping cough, outbreak in Canterbury is still in full swing, with the region having the highest number of cases in the country in the past two weeks. There have been 1258 pertussis notifications reported throughout the country this year, compared with 198 for the same time last year. The lower North Island and the South Island are taking the brunt of the outbreak.

Across the United States, cases of the deadly disease whooping cough are appearing more frequently than in decades and public health officials worry the increases are due at least in part to the reluctance of some parents to vaccinate their children.

Oregon has seen 347 cases so far this year, on track to a 30-year high. Seattle has 189 cases, including the highest number of infected infants in 25 years. Texas has had 32 cases in its panhandle region, the most there in 35 years.

The lesson of these outbreaks is that the modern medical paradigm is deeply flawed. Now, those it claims to have protected are victims.

Incidents of whooping cough have been growing more and more common since the mid-nineties, according to a report in the American Journal of Nursing(1) Those most likely to be infected are infants. However, there has been an increasing trend to the disease in adolescents and adults. Further complicating the picture is that there are two kinds of bacteria that cause whooping cough: Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis. Only one, B. pertussis has an associated vaccine. Is vaccination for B. pertussis causing these whooping cough outbreaks by providing a breeding ground for its cousin, B. parapertussis?

The CDC and NIH keep pushing the pertussis vaccine, in spite of info that it's causing the new whooping cough epidemic that is 10 times more deadly than the old whooping cough.

In light of the coverage of whooping cough outbreaks, which almost invariably and falsely blame the unvaccinated, this article that explains what's happening needs to be seen again. The outbreaks are caused by the vaccine! The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would prefer that you remain unaware of a couple of highly significant facts about the whooping cough resurgence. It is most likely caused by the pertussis vaccine and it's ten times more deadly than the original variety. To top it all off, they are blaming the unvaccinated for the new more lethal strain of whooping cough, and they are pushing people ever harder to be vaccinated with the same vaccine that's almost certainly responsible for it!

Whooping cough. Those are among the last words Jennifer Crocker expected to be on her mind during a recent visit to the doctor. But she hasn't been able to shake all the sound bites she's heard lately on the local news.

"I didn't even think about any of this before," Crocker said, immediately before receiving the pertussis booster in early August. "Not until talking with my sister, who is about to have a baby." The confusion is much the same almost anywhere you go in the United States, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. When whooping cough is present in a community, people learn the basics of how to protect themselves and others. When it fades, they forget.

It's the first state to declare a whooping cough, or pertussis, epidemic since 2010, when California had more than 9,000 cases, including 10 deaths. Washington has had 10 times the cases reported in 2011, and so has Wisconsin with nearly 2,000 cases this year, though that state has not declared an epidemic. California responded to its crisis two years ago with a public information campaign, readily available vaccines and a new law requiring a booster shot for middle- and high-school students. Doctors were urged to spot whooping cough early, send infected babies to the hospital and promptly treat those diagnosed.

This Reuters story (quoting the WHO) points that hospital patients have a 10% chance of receiving a medical error and a 1 in 300 chance of dying from it. Contrast that with the 1 in 10 million chance of dying in an air crash.

As potential patients of this dangerous system, we need to be aware of its risk and defend ourselves against it. I have huge respect for the human immune system and its ability to conquer most infections and challenges without medical assistance. Maximizing proper nutrition and minimizing junk processed food and chemical toxins is essential to stay out of the clutches of the dysfunctional medical apparatus.
