A Columbia University scientist plans to test whether gold salts improve the functioning of "autistic mice" -- a step toward finding whether they could help children with autism.

Dr. Mady Hornig of Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health will give the compound to mice that have been bred to be susceptible to thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative in children's immunizations until recently. Some researchers and parents believe thimerosal is implicated in the explosion of autism diagnoses over the past decade, though federal health authorities say that theory has been discredited.

If the United States were to launch an annual influenza-vaccination program among the nation's school children, resources also should go to evaluate the program's success in reducing community-wide flu transmission.

Performing such an evaluation would be a crucial step in laying the groundwork to help the nation stage an organized response to a flu pandemic, assert M. Elizabeth Halloran, M.D., D.Sc., and Ira M. Longini Jr., Ph.D., both members of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division and professors of biostatistics at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

WASHINGTON -- As doctors and health authorities fight state bans on mercury in vaccines and keep giving it to kids and pregnant women, one fact stands out: their certainty.

The image of pediatricians and public officials as valiant defenders of mercury takes a bit of getting used to, given their longstanding efforts to keep the toxic element out of our food, our bodies and the environment. No reasonable person -- let alone health professional -- would advocate keeping mercury in childhood vaccines unless they were absolutely certain it was an exception to this lethal legacy.

A new study shows a direct relationship between mercury in children's vaccines and autism, contradicting government claims there is no proven relationship between the two.

Published in the March 10 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, the data show since mercury was removed from childhood vaccines, the reported rates of autism and other neurological disorders in children not only stopped increasing but actually dropped sharply - by as much as 35 percent. Using the government's own databases, independent researchers analyzed reports of childhood neurological disorders, including autism, before and after removal of mercury-based preservatives.

Dhaka - Eleven-month-old Tumpa Moni may not know how lucky she was to get two drops of polio vaccine on her tongue on Sunday at a Bangladesh vaccination camp.

But her 15-year-old cousin, Babul, does know. The disease left him paralysed when he was three - when the medicine was unavailable to him - and has recently re-emerged, prompting a government drive to vaccinate up to 20-million children against the dreaded malady.

Twenty children from a school in Vinnytsia oblast have been hospitalized with acute respiratory conditions they contracted after being vaccinated for tuberculosis. This is the third such incident in the country in the past week.

Vinnytsia medical officials have seized the hypodermic needles for analysis. Parents are complaining that their children were vaccinated for TB without their consent. In the past week, children in Khmelnytsk and Kherson oblasts have also been hospitalized after receiving injections intended to prevent tuberculosis.

Microsoft Computer Software Corporation boss Bill Gates and his wife Melinda will donate $75 million to develop the vaccination for pneumonia, which causes thousands of children to die every year.

American health sector giant PATH announced the donation made by Mr. and Mrs. Gates at a conference in Australia. PATH Vaccination Chief John Boslego said, "A dose of the vaccination costs $60, it is agreed that this is very expensive for developing countries" and mentioned they have failed to conduct a health research in fifty percent of countries suffering from the disease.

More than 600 cases of mumps were reported in Iowa as of late last week, with smaller outbreaks in five nearby states. The highly contagious disease is usually uncomfortable but not life-threatening.

There's been some fear about the safety of vaccines, particularly because of thimerosal, a mercury compound used as a preservative. Some advocates have sought to tie vaccines to sudden infant death syndrome and rising rates of autism. Federal officials have been working to remove thimerosal from vaccines, and the Centers for Disease Control stresses an autism link is yet unproven.
