Vaccination is 'ending badger cull', claims the Badger Trust's Dominic Dyer

The roll-out of Government-backed badger vaccination programmes to tackle the spread of bovine tuberculosis spells the beginning of the end of badger culling a leading opponent has claimed.

Dominic Dyer, chief executive of the Badger Trust, made the statement after what he described as a: "ground-breaking" meeting on Tuesday in which Farming Minister George Eustice met a wide range of wildlife and farming groups.

A million Americans will be given smallpox vaccinations under the first wave of a mass inoculation order being prepared by President Bush.

The initial stage of the decision would see 500,000 military personnel and 510,000 civilian medical workers receive the jab.<br><br>A second step would involve up to ten million frontline workers such as police, the emergency services, and other healthcare staff who would be the first to respond to a bioterrorism attack.<br><br>Mr Bush is expected to publish the details in the next few days after months of agonising. One to three people in the initial wave of one million recipients are likely to die from side-effects of the vaccine, according to estimates by health experts, and dozens of others will contract life-threatening illnesses.

Results of an EORTC study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology show that vaccination with GM2/KLH-QS-21 does not benefit patients with stage II melanoma.

Vaccination with GM2/KLH-QS-21 stimulates the production of antibodies to the GM2 ganglioside, an antigen expressed by many melanomas. Serological response to GM2 was shown to be a positive prognostic factor in patients with melanoma and was the rationale for this trial.

A new study exploring the influences behind parents' decision about vaccination found that social networks play a key role. Published in the journal Pediatrics, the study looked at two types of social networks - "people networks," made of family members.

Brunson included 196 first-time parents in the online survey. All were born in the United States and had children aged 18 months or younger. Among the group, 126 "conformers" followed the nationally recommended vaccination schedule, while 70 "nonconformers" either delayed vaccination, didn't vaccinate completely or did not vaccinate at all.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Monday sent another team to Lucknow to probe the death of four infants who died reportedly after being administered vaccines during an immunisation drive on Saturday.

The teams would ascertain whether the vaccines administered were spurious or expired; or whether there was a procedural lapse while giving the shots by auxiliary nurse midwives or if the cold chain was well-maintained. There was still no clarity about whether the vaccines given were those of anti-measles, BCG or Hepatitis B.
