Geneva Fielding, a single mother since age 16, has struggled to raise her three energetic boys in the housing projects of Roxbury. Nothing has come easily, least of all money.

Even so, she resisted some years back when neighbors told her about a federal program called SSI that could pay her thousands of dollars a year. The benefit was a lot like welfare, better in many ways, but it came with a catch: To qualify, a child had to be disabled. And if the disability was mental or behavioral - something like ADHD - the child pretty much had to be taking psychotropic drugs. "To get the check," Fielding, 34, has concluded with regret, "you've got to medicate the child."

They're like kids with one parent who has given them cash to go to the candy store but who know they they might at any time get a call from the other parent telling them not to spend the money.

Does the kid wait for the go-ahead from parent #2, or set a new world "get to the store to spend all the money" land speed record? In the above semi-hypothetical example, the Supreme Court is parent #2 and the Obama administration and HHS are the kid in the store. Oh, and I forgot to mention that parent #1 gave the kid your money...

Judging from the close of his State of the Union, President Obama has developed a new-found admiration for the ability of the U.S. military to get things done.

So much so that he's now exhorting all Americans to be more like the military by lining up and marching in lock-step--toward his own political goals. Soldiers, Obama exhorts us, "are not consumed with personal ambition. They don't obsess over their differences. They focus on the mission at hand. They work together. Imagine what we could accomplish if we followed their example." By "followed their example," Obama means line up and march in lock-step with him in the implementation of his progressive agenda. Personal ambition, Obama says, is bad because it keeps the "we" from accomplishing the mission.

With a bit of lock, the truth will be revealed

When blood and urine tests fail, evidence often can be found concealed in a lock of hair.

Victoria Police use the tests in cases of alleged drug-facilitated sexual assault. But most of the lab's work is done for welfare authorities, family lawyers and workplaces. Child welfare authorities request the tests when investigating allegations that a child has been sedated with an illicit drug.

The Wisconsin GOP reports that Democrats in the Bay State are "using a fraudulent tactic to harass and intimidate constituents who favor recalling Democrat Senator Dave Hansen of Green Bay."

Somehow, calls are being placed in the name of "Bay Care Aurora" - a local hospital - by left-wing activists targeting voters who signed petitions to recall fleebagger state Sen. Hansen...

Call it karma, just desserts, or schadenfreude.  The cost to taxpayers of doctors' notes excusing Wisconsin teachers from work so that they don't get fired for illegally walking out on classes has been estimated at $6 million.

Meanwhile, those notes may not help some of the teachers keep their jobs anyway. If Democrats don't return to the state Senate by Friday, Governor Scott Walker will order layoffs from lists that districts have already been advised to prepare...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A quirky Wisconsin law that makes it a crime for restaurants to serve margarine at the table and not butter is being targeted for repeal.

Wisconsin banned the sale or use of margarine colored to imitate butter in 1895. That wasn't repealed until 1967, and since then the fight over margarine versus butter has largely cooled. Kooyenga says he doesn't anticipate much fervor over his proposal.

Winlock 15-year-old Taylor Rehmeyer has battled an aggressive brain cancer for nearly a decade with chemotherapy and radiation. But she and her mother say it was marijuana that finally cured her.

"She got an MRI (in May) that said no major abnormalities. The doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital don't want to admit it was cannabis, but I don't care. She's cancer-free," Karen Owen said in a recent interview. "It's more than we could have ever hoped for." Taylor was diagnosed at age 6 with a rare brain tumor that has returned three times. In September 2012, Taylor was one of the first children in America to receive proton radiation at Philadelphia's Roberts Proton Therapy Center. The high-tech treatments worked - for awhile. Taylor's tumor shrunk after initial radiation sessions but started growing again last August. That's when Owen, determined to heal her daughter, turned to marijuana oil therapy.
