We have some real problems and they are only going to get worse. We have a right to know what we are eating. People are getting allergies, this isn't normal folks. If we don't pay attention to what's happening, in our food supply, to our farmers, the plants, and ultimately our grocery store we are going to wake up one day and realize we trusted the health of our children and the health of our families to the government. And the government let us down.

Men who eat a regular diet of deep-fried foods such as french fries, fried chicken and doughnuts have a higher risk of prostate cancer, U.S. researchers say.

Janet L. Stanford, Marni Stott-Miller and Marian Neuhouser, all of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Public Health Sciences Division in Seattle, analyzed data from two prior population-based case-control studies involving 1,549 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,492 age-matched healthy controls. The men were Caucasian and African-American Seattle-area residents ages 35 to 74. Participants were asked to fill out a dietary questionnaire about their usual food intake, including specific deep-fried foods.

Zebrafish, often used in genetics studies, may hold the key to repairing damaged retinas and returning eyesight to people, Canadian researchers say.

Scientist at the University of Alberta report a zebrafish's stem cells can selectively regenerate damaged photoreceptor cells. Geneticists have known for some time that unlike human stem cells, stem cells in zebrafish can replace damaged cells involved in many components of eyesight.

Young people who favor organic, local and sustainable foods are more likely to make healthier food choices, U.S. researchers say.

Jennifer E. Pelletier, Melissa N. Laska, Dianne Neumark-Sztainer and Mary Story of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Epidemiology and Community Health conducted a cross-sectional study, which examined the characteristics and dietary behaviors of 1,201 students. The study participants were at a two-year community college and a four-year public university in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. The participants reported low, moderate, or high importance on alternative food production practices.

An Oklahoma house has been dubbed "The Twin House" with a third consecutive family to live there having a set of twins.

Chelsea Smith of Oklahoma City said she and her husband, Brady, were not concerned in summer 2011 when Jennifer Gaines, who had lived in her house two tenants before her, told them that the last two couples to live there had boy/girl fraternal twins, The Oklahoman reported Monday. "I thought it was crazy," Chelsea said. "I thought, 'Well a house doesn't make you have twins.' However, Chelsea said she discovered she was pregnant in early 2012 and an ultrasound soon revealed she was carrying twins - a boy and a girl.

DNA, normally structured as a double helix, has been seen in a "quadruple helix" form in human cells and could be related to cancer, British researchers say.

The double helix has been considered the normal form of DNA for 60 years, since researchers James Watson and Francis Crick described the way two long chemical chains wound up around each other to encode the information that cells need to build and maintain our bodies. A four-stranded version scientists have been able to produce in test tubes for a number of years has now been found in human cells for the first time, the BBC reported Monday.

An anti-bacterial agent called triclosan used in many hand soaps has been detected in increasing amounts in several Minnesota freshwater lakes, researchers say.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota say the findings are directly linked to the increasing use of such anti-bacterial soaps and other products over the past decades. The researchers also reported detecting chemical compounds called chlorinated triclosan derivatives, created when triclosan is exposed to chlorine during wastewater disinfection processes. When exposed to sunlight both triclosan and its chlorinated derivatives form dioxins that have potential toxic effects in the environment, they said.

One year after England banned smoking in public places there was more than a 12 percent drop in children hospitalized with asthma, researchers say.

Researchers at Imperial College London said before the smoking ban was implemented, hospital admissions for children suffering a severe asthma attack were increasing by 2.2 percent per year, peaking at 26,969 admissions in 2006/2007. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found the childhood asthma hospitalizations declined by 12.3 percent. The study also found the smoking ban resulted in the equivalent to 6,802 fewer hospital admissions in the first three years of the legislation.

U.S. researchers say they've uncovered vulnerabilities in the security of personal genetic information submitted by participants in genomic studies.

Researchers at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts say armed with just a computer, an Internet connection and publicly accessible online resources they were able to identify nearly 50 individuals who had submitted genetic material as participants in the studies. Under certain circumstances, the full names and identities of genomic research participants can be determined even when their genetic information is held in databases in de-identified form, a Whitehead release said Thursday.

In a study, men rated obese female defendants guiltier than the lean female defendants, U.S. researchers say.

Lead author Natasha Schvey and colleagues at the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity in New Haven, Conn., said weight stigma might extend to the courtroom. The study involved 471 adult participants who were presented with a mock court case, including images of alleged defendants. The participants viewed 1-out-4 defendant images: a lean male, a lean female, an obese male and an obese female. After viewing the image, participants were asked to rate how guilty they thought the defendant was.
