We have some real problems and they are only going to get worse. We have a right to know what we are eating. People are getting allergies, this isn't normal folks. If we don't pay attention to what's happening, in our food supply, to our farmers, the plants, and ultimately our grocery store we are going to wake up one day and realize we trusted the health of our children and the health of our families to the government. And the government let us down.

Sugar-sweetened or diet soda may increase the risk of depression, but drinking coffee may slightly lower the risk, U.S. researchers say.

Study author Dr. Honglei Chen of the National Institutes of Health in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina said the study involved about 264,000 people ages 50-71 who drank soda, tea, fruit punch and coffee from 1995 to 1996. About 10 years later, Chen and colleagues asked the study participants whether they had been diagnosed with depression since 2000. A total of 11,311 depression diagnoses were made, Chen said.

One in 25 U.S. motorists admits having fallen asleep behind the wheel at least once in the past month, federal researchers found.

Researchers at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said their analysis of responses from 147,076 drivers in 19 states and the District of Columbia found 4.2 percent reported having nodded off at least for a moment while driving at least once in the previous 30 days. Their findings were derived from answers to a set of questions about insufficient sleep administered through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System during 2009/2010. Reports of falling asleep while driving were more common among adults who reported typically sleeping fewer than 6 hours per day, snoring or unintentionally falling asleep during the day compared with other adults who did not report these characteristics, the CDC said.

Eating a high-protein breakfast with nuts may lead to being leaner and less hungry during the rest of the day, a fitness expert says.

Charles Poliquin said his single best dietary tip for optimal leanness, energy and sustained mental focus, is the meat-and-nuts breakfast, which allows for a gradual rise in blood sugar and results in decreased cravings throughout the entire day, AskMen.com reported. Examples of Poliquin's high-protein breakfast are one to two lean turkey burgers and a handful of almonds, a salmon omelet and a handful of walnuts, or two lean ground-beef patties and one handful of Brazil nuts.

Most U.S. adults sleep on their sides, forget their dreams in the morning and often sleep with someone who snores, a survey of 3,700 indicates.

A survey for home furnishings retailer Anna's Linens to coincide with National Sleep Day found 74 percent of U.S. adults said they wear pajamas to bed, 8 percent said they slept naked, 74 percent said they failed to recall their dreams in the morning, 74 said they sleep on their sides and 47 percent said they shared a bed with someone who snored. Nearly two-thirds said they got a "restful night's sleep" only three nights or less per week, only 10 percent said they got a restful night sleep every night, while one-quarter said they slept restfully five to six nights per week, the survey said.

As with any physical activity, the body must warm up so ease into snow shoveling, try not to do it all at once and take breaks, a U.S. cardiologist says.

Dr. Charles Davidson, clinical chief of cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and medical director at Northwestern's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, said before snow shoveling eat a small meal to provide a source of energy. However, digestion puts strain on the heart, so eating a large meal before any physical activity should be avoided. Additionally, alcohol and caffeine should also be avoided just prior to shoveling, Davidson said.

Marijuana possession is illegal on a federal level, the Justice Department said, even as Washington state's law decriminalizing possession went into effect.

"Regardless of any changes in state law, including the change that will go into effect on Dec. 6 [Thursday] in Washington state, growing, selling or possessing any amount of marijuana remains illegal under federal law," statement issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle Wednesday said. Voters in Washington and Colorado approved ballot initiatives Election Day that decriminalized the possession of as much as an ounce of marijuana by adults. The Washington state law was effective Thursday and Colorado's law will go into effect in the coming weeks.

A Florida man said police shot him with a Taser dart for using a garden hose to attempt to fight a fire in his neighbor's home.

Dan Jensen, 42, said he initially complied with Pinellas Park police when they told him to get back from the burning house Thursday, but he returned with the garden hose when he became frustrated with how long it was taking firefighters to arrive, the Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times reported Tuesday. Jensen said he heard an officer tell another to "take him down" with a Taser and he then felt the jolt of electricity from the device.

Amid growing concerns students are using medications such as Ritalin to boost performance, some British schools say they might consider drug tests before exams.

Discussions have been held on how to detect students using drugs that allegedly give them an advantage by helping them remain alert and focused, Cambridge University Professor Barbara Sahakian said. Drugs meant to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder are becoming increasingly popular with healthy people looking for an extra edge, she said.

Patients are regularly advised to get an annual flu vaccine, but 25 percent of St. Louis' emergency medical technicians do not get vaccinated, researchers say.

Sixty percent of EMTs who did not get vaccinated said they do not trust the public health authorities when they say the influenza vaccine is safe, and about a third said that flu vaccine has a lot of side effects and reported being afraid of them. More than half in this unvaccinated group also said they do not believe they can play a role in transmitting influenza to their patients if they are not vaccinated. "It's a concern that so many EMTs who are educated in healthcare do not believe that the public health message regarding influenza vaccine safety and efficacy is reliable," study co-investigator Kate Wright, an associate professor and director of Heartland Centers at Saint Louis University, said in a statement.
