We have some real problems and they are only going to get worse. We have a right to know what we are eating. People are getting allergies, this isn't normal folks. If we don't pay attention to what's happening, in our food supply, to our farmers, the plants, and ultimately our grocery store we are going to wake up one day and realize we trusted the health of our children and the health of our families to the government. And the government let us down.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed the presence of white-nose syndrome in federally listed endangered gray bats in two counties in Tennessee.

White-nose syndrome - a fungal disease first documented in New York in 2006 and now found in 19 states and four Canadian provinces - has decimated bat populations across eastern North America, with mortality rates reaching up to 100 percent at some sites, officials said. The Tennessee discovery is the first confirmation of WNS in federally listed gray bats, TheChattanoogan.com reported Tuesday.

Many U.S. medical students preparing to be residents already have negative views of their workloads as physicians, researchers found.

Lead study author Dr. Julie Phillips, a University of Michigan Health System resident at the time of the study and now Lansing Community Clerkship director at Michigan State University's department of family medicine, said a multi-school study found med students had an especially grim view of entering primary care.

Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District trustees Wednesday were asked to reconsider independent study policies, in the wake of a scabies outbreak this spring that prompted many parents to pull their children from class.

Tenaya Elementary School teacher Joanne Beaudreau told trustees at their regular meeting that the recent scabies scare prompted many parents to pull their children out of class, causing them to fall behind. The students have been studying independently, which Beaudreau said is creating more work for her and other teachers.

I tell you, I've had it up to here with the line from the other side about tax revenues and a "balanced approach."

No I'm not blind to the fact that we are in a recession, and thus our income tax system collects less now (the tax system is a topic for another thread I'm planning) than in times of plenty. But what bugs the hell out of me is that the left insists that we need a balanced approach to cutting the deficit. That is, in their minds, both cutting spending and increasing taxes. Here's some advice, though, straight from me to you: We didn't get into this mess by not taxing enough.

A 95-year-old resident of an Illinois nursing home died early Saturday, hours after being shocked with a Taser and bean bag rounds in a confrontation with police.

Authorities said John Warna was a resident at Victory Centre of Park Forest, on the 100 block of South Main Street in the south suburb. He was threatening paramedics and staff with a cane and a metal shoehorn when police arrived at the complex, they said. Police said they struck him with a Taser and bean bag rounds after he threatened officers with a 12-inch butcher knife.

A local Texas police department is standing by an officer who dragged a 77-year-old grandmother out of her car for speeding after she repeatedly refused to provide her driver's license.

The entire arrest was caught on video by the Keene Police Department. The woman, Lynn Bedford, of nearby Cleburne, was stopped on Aug. 19 for driving 66 mph in a 50-mph zone. Bedford told Sgt. Gene Geheb that she had a bladder infection and had to go to the bathroom, but the situation quickly escalated when the officer asked several times for her identification and she refused.

An Ohio third-grader weighing more than 200 pounds has been taken from his family and placed into foster care when county social workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight.

The Plain Dealer reports that the 8-year-old is considered severely obese and at risk for diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The Ohio Health Department estimates more than 12 percent of third-graders statewide are severely obese. The removal of the Cleveland child is the first state officials can recall of a child being put in foster care for a strictly weight-related issue.

While not news to Zero Hedge readers who knew about the final debt settlement of US debt about 10 days ahead of schedule, it is now official.

According to the US Treasury, America has closed the books on 2011 with debt at an all time record $15,222,940,045,451.09. And, as was observed here first in all of the press, US debt to GDP is now officially over 100%, or 100.3% to be specific, a fact which the US government decided to delay exposing until the very end of the calendar year. We wonder, rhetorically, just how prominent of a talking point this historic event will be in any upcoming GOP primary debates.
