Medical Health News

We have some real problems and they are only going to get worse. We have a right to know what we are eating. People are getting allergies, this isn't normal folks. If we don't pay attention to what's happening, in our food supply, to our farmers, the plants, and ultimately our grocery store we are going to wake up one day and realize we trusted the health of our children and the health of our families to the government. And the government let us down.

John Boehner, calling it like it is.

At the same time that the president took to the podium to chastise members of Congress for purportedly putting politics before country, the House Speaker expressed his own frustration with the president's unwillingness to actually negotiate...

Payroll tax extension, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways.

Why do politicians continue to debate this patently poor policy as though it represents the pinnacle of politically savvy middle-class tax cuts? It's not even technically a tax cut - just a premature borrowing from our own retirement safety net, which happens to be in dire straits anyway.

Maryanne Godboldo, a mother in Michigan, noticed that pills prescribed by her daughter's doctor were making her condition worse, not better. So Mrs. Godboldo stopped giving them to her. That's when the trouble began.

When Child Protective Services (CPS) bureaucrats became aware that the girl was not receiving her prescribed medication, they decided the child should be taken away from her mother's custody on grounds of medical neglect. When Ms. Godboldo refused to surrender her daughter to the state, CPS enlisted the help of a police SWAT team! On March 24 of this year a 12 hour standoff ensued and young Ariana was taken into custody.

If you waste much time on Facebook, you've probably stumbled upon at least one of the memes I address in this article.

If you waste much time on Facebook, you've probably stumbled upon at least one of the memes I address in this article. The style of the meme is to take individuals, have them explain how their country is able to accomplish some national goal, then state that it's the "opposite of what America does." None of the quotes are real, and indeed the Facebook page that creates them acknowledged this: "the Opposite of America memes were created by US Uncut and have reached 30 million people. The reason you know the quotes are fake is because the series is so popular-it's not too different than the Onion. We aren't trying to fool anyone and we don't use fake quotes on anything else."

On Tuesday, October 8, I participated in a New York Times debate about the effects of the government shutdown and budget sequestration.

"What federal spending are we better off without?" asked the Times of analysts from the left, right, and libertarian parts of the ideological spectrum. "What have we learned, seven months into sequestration and one week into a government shutdown?" Here's my answer...

Both NRLC Director of Education Dr. Randall K. O'Bannon (see below) and myself have written glowing reviews of a book that transformed the way we understand fetal development: "From Conception to Birth: a Life Unfolds." The author is Alexander Tsiaras.

His work is amazing, but it is hard to give a name to what Tsiaras does. He describes himself a scientist, an artist, and a journalist, but what he has done is to develop scanning and visualization software that enables him to develop rich, 4-D animations of different human body parts, organs, and processes. Some of his most stunning work has been with fetal development. He catalogued his work in "Conception to Birth: a Life Unfolds" (published in 2002) and then animated this in a series of 40 videos - one for each week -on his website.

When little Shelby Duis was found dead at her Spirit Lake home - with massive head injuries, fractured ribs and two broken hands - it sent a shock through the entire state.

Neighbors and day-care workers had warned child protective workers for nearly a year before the 2-year-old's January 2000 death that the girl was being abused. Then, later that same year, an Oskaloosa man came forward to say that he'd told officials for months his 23-month-old son was being mistreated by his estranged wife and her boyfriend before the boy was hospitalized with critical brain and spinal injuries.

This time of year not only marks the start of school, it also marks a time when those creepy, crawly critters known as head lice like to pop up in classrooms across the country.

And while lice outbreaks are nothing new, they're actually becoming more difficult treat. Some experts are bracing for so-called "super lice" which are becoming resistant to traditional over-the-counter medications.
