Court showdown over GM canola contamination

Australia's system of organic certification will come under intense scrutiny when two neighbouring farmers do battle in the Western Australian Supreme Court in a test case on genetically modified crop contamination.

Organic farmer Steve Marsh, from Kojonup in the state's Great Southern region, is suing his neighbour Michael Baxter for alleged negligence and nuisance. Mr Marsh claims genetically modified (GM) canola seed blew onto his farm in 2010, causing him to lose his organic status. He says he is prepared to risk his 480-hectare property to defend his right to farm without interference.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signs order abolishing state's CPS agency

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer announced Monday that she has abolished the state's Child Protective Services department and has replaced it with a new division.

The move comes in response to an internal investigation that revealed 6,000 reports of child abuse or neglect were never investigated. The Republican governor said she was ending the agency's oversight by the Department of Economic Security by executive order, saying the recent scandal "broke my heart and makes me angry." "Enough with the uninvestigated reports of abuse and neglect. Enough with the lack of transparency. And enough with the excuses," she said. Brewer praised a special team she created to investigate the problems and said more than 3,000 children have now been seen by social workers or police.

Diabetic teen upset with TSA screeners at Salt Lake City Airport

A Colorado teen is upset with screeners at Salt Lake City International Airport. The type one diabetic says TSA agents were abrupt, rude and were responsible for breaking her $10,000 insulin pump. A pump she has to have to survive.

Savannah Barry is mad and on a mission. She wants travelers to be warned before they walk through TSA security. "They need to get with the program and have some education across the board for TSA." After participating in a DECA conference in Salt Lake City with several classmates last week, Savannah, who is a type one diabetic and wears an insulin pump 24 hours a day, says she ran into TSA agents who were not prepared to deal with her medical situation.

A new bipartisan battle over parental rights and health care for kids is heating up in California as proponents of a new bill want to ensure that children are immunized.

In a last-ditch effort to sway Governor Jerry Brown, concerned parents rallied at the Capitol Friday urging him to veto a bill that requires parents to get a medical professional's signature on a form in order to opt out of getting their children vaccinated.

It was a suspected case, Jha said, of what has been dubbed "silent hypoxics" or "happy hypoxics," which refer to anecdotes popping up across the country of some coronavirus patients who appear to be functioning normally but have surprisingly low oxygen levels. Though not immediately life-threatening, low oxygen levels could exacerbate health problems associated with COVID-19, if left untreated.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned in report released today that the number of phone calls to U.S. poison control centers related to e-cigarette use has increased from just one call per month on average in 2010 to nearly 200 calls per month in early 2014.

The feud between two potential GOP presidential contenders escalated today as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie traded barbs about "pork" and "bacon" throughout the day.

In an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer, Paul nicknamed Christie the "King of Bacon" after the New Jersey governor accused him of engaging in "pork barrel spending." "This is the king of bacon talking about bacon," Paul said.

Don Thompson may be CEO, director and president of McDonald's Corp., but he still has to answer to a nine-year old girl who accuses the fast food giant of trying to "trick kids into eating food that isn't good for them."

Hannah Robertson, 9, flew in with her mom from Kelowna, British Columbia, to attend McDonald's annual shareholder meeting Thursday in Oak Brook, Ill., the company's headquarters. "Something that I don't think is fair is when big companies try to trick kids into eating food that isn't good for them by using toys and cartoon characters," Robertson read during the question and answer part of the meeting. "If parents haven't taught their kids about healthy eating then the kids probably believe that junk food is good for them because it might taste good."

Fewer Bees in US a Threat to World's Almond Supply

In an almond orchard in California's Central Valley, bee inspector Neil Trent pried open a buzzing hive and pulled out a frame to see if it was at least two-thirds covered with bees.

The number of bees needed is expected to increase as almond demand grows and orchards continue to expand. Already, more than half of the country's honeybees are brought to California at the end of February for almond pollination, which requires about 1.5 million hives from out of state, and another 500,000 from elsewhere in the state. Honeybees are preferred for commercial-scale pollination, because they are social, build larger colonies than other bees, and their hives can easily be moved.

Tasered 10-Year-Old Boy Sues Police

A 10-year-old boy attending a Tularosa, N.M., Intermediate School's Career Day expected it to be fun and educational, but instead he ended up in the emergency room.

The boy, identified as R.D., blacked out after receiving 50,000 volts of electricity when struck by a police officer's Taser gun. Rachel Higgins, a guardian appointed by the court to protect the child's privacy filed a lawsuit Oct. 26 in 1st Judicial District Court in Santa Fe County against Police Officer Chris Webb and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety on behalf of R.D., claiming that Webb fired his electronic control weapon at the boy on May 4, 2012. Webb has been charged with battery, failure to render emergency medical care, unreasonable seizure and excessive force.
