Medical Health News

We have some real problems and they are only going to get worse. We have a right to know what we are eating. People are getting allergies, this isn't normal folks. If we don't pay attention to what's happening, in our food supply, to our farmers, the plants, and ultimately our grocery store we are going to wake up one day and realize we trusted the health of our children and the health of our families to the government. And the government let us down.

Genetically modified foods are easier to avoid in some countries that others, but the genetic contamination in the United States is so high right now that the odds say you'll be consuming at least a small percentage of GMO material.

Soybeans and soy products are particularly high risk items since the vast majority of soy in the U.S. is genetically modified to withstand heavy doses of health-damaging agrochemicals, but there may be a way to protect damage from GMO soybeans according to a new study from a team of researchers in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Even as the United States government continues to push for the use of more chemically-intensive and corporate-dominated farming methods such as GMOs and monoculture-based crops, the United Nations is once against sounding the alarm.

According to the new UN report, major changes are needed in our food, agriculture and trade systems, with a shift toward local small-scale farmers and food systems recommended. Diversity of farms, reducing the use of fertilizer and other changes are desperately needed according to the report, which was highlighted in this article from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

The glaring problem with Monsanto's "website promise" not to sue. Early in 2013, a verdict was reached in the OSGATA (Organic Seed Growers and Traders Association) v. Monsanto lawsuit by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.

The organic farmers association was seeking protection from patent infringement in the case of accidental drift from GMO pollen for its members. The result was a disappointing one for OSGATA, as a three-judge panel ruled that the lawsuit would not be allowed to continue due to the explanation that "Monsanto has made binding assurances that it will not 'take legal action against growers whose crops might inadvertently contain traces of Monsanto biotech genes (because, for example, some transgenic seed or pollen blew onto the grower's land)."

There are times when the elusive "tipping point" toward the end or at least containment of genetically modified foods seems light years away, and then there are times when it seems like all the momentum is on the other side and a real change is imminent.

The percentage of people who want to see labels has consistently polled in the 90 percent range, with one 2013 poll conducted by the New York Times showing a final result of 93 percent in favor of the "Yes" crowd. The same study also found that about 75% of Americans are concerned about the number of GMOs, while 26 percent said they aren't safe to eat and 13 percent said they're worried about the environmental effects.

As cannabis is taken more seriously as a medicine and a treatment, more people are taking a chance and using it as a treatment for terminal illnesses.

This treatment has had overwhelmingly positive results for countless people who had no other hope of recovery. Every day more stories and scientific studies are appearing from all over the world where people of all ages, even young children, are cured of life-threatening illnesses with cannabis oil.

The off-duty officer unloaded 14 shots into a car waiting at a red light.

In the past decade, civil suits against the NYPD have more than doubled, hitting a record high of 9,500 in 2012, according to CBS Local. They've cost taxpayers $1 billion and tend to result from such outstanding police work as making false arrests and shooting people's pets. Now, the city might be on the hook for $90 million thanks to a NYPD officer who allegedly got wasted and started shooting at a stopped car for no apparent reason.

Among the ostensibly "non-essential" services on hold during the government shutdown is the Food and Drug Administration's food inspection program. As many as 80 food production facilities each day may be going uninspected.

Food coming from outside the U.S. is also going unmonitored. As Food Safety News first reported, meat inspectors at the USDA are still on duty, but food-safety workers at the FDA are not allowed to use their cellphones, check their emails or, most important, inspect imported food. Normally, according to Quartz, the FDA blocks imports from tens of thousands of facilities with records of violations.

A family claims in court that a police officer responding to a complaint allegedly attacked their son, shot him in the ensuing altercation, and refused to give him CPR.

Showing "total lack of awareness," a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy awoke a mentally ill man and then shot him to death in his own bedroom, the man's family claims in court. Theodore and Karen Rose sued Sacramento County, its Sheriff Scott Jones, and Deputy David McEntire for the wrongful death of their son Johnathan Rose, in Federal Court. The Roses called 911 on Jan. 17, 2012, to report that Johnathan, 24, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder, had become agitated after his first meeting with a new psychiatrist. The Roses say in the complaint that they had learned while living in nearby Placer County that the best way to defuse these situations was to call for police assistance.

Thanks to the drug war, police have much more incentive to go after drug crimes than more heinous crimes.

In Colorado, a 13-person SWAT raid on two medical marijuana users began with a kicked-in door and a flash bang grenade. "They acted like they were coming for a big terrorist," Chuck Ball, one of the patients, told KRDO. "They came in here, drug me across the kitchen floor and handcuffed me," he said. "They kept telling me to shut up." Strange, isn't it, that hunches and vague tips about potential marijuana growing (in a state that recently legalized the drug!) is motivation enough to send a SWAT team busting down a door? Compare that to recent reports that police in Cleveland, Ohio ignored years of tips and calls about strange things going on in the home of the three Cleveland men suspected of holding captive, brutally raping and beating three women for nearly a decade.
