Smokers have long insisted that cigarettes helped them concentrate. Nicotine, it seems, exhibits powerful pharmacological effects on the brain.

Some researchers are proposing that nicotine patches could help people with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD). Nicotine patches for children' It makes a LOT of sense for the companies that manufacture the nicotine patches. With smoking rates slowly falling, the market for nicotine patches doesn't have a strong future. But if you can line up schoolchildren to wear them and get them hooked on nicotine, then you generate an extraordinary volume of repeat business.

650 Florida foster children, including some that are not under the care of a pediatrician, have been given mind-altering drugs. Drugs that have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use with small children.

The state Department of Children & Families naturally disputes the validity of the research. They always do when they're "caught out." They quibble with the findings by saying that "too few children were included in the study's sample." Such studies commonly use small samples of a subject group and that is a recognized, accepted method. This group studied 1,180 foster children out of 15,000 in state care. <br><br>More than half -- 652 -- were on at least one drug. Seventeen of the 652 were preschoolers.

A social worker in the Shoals is accused of trying to buy painkillers with a forged prescription.

Narcotic agents say Scott tried to fill a prescription for Lorcet. Scott is a social worker at the Lauderdale County Department of Human Resources. Police say Scott admitted to calling in the prescription. She's free on a $3,500 bond.

Testing has begun on humans for an experimental vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus, US researchers have said.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is administering the vaccine to 27 volunteers.<br><br>The virus for one of the world's most lethal diseases originated in Africa and the US has expressed fears that it could be used as a biological weapon.

With the holidays approaching, one family is hoping they have enough money to continue to pay medical bills, let alone gifts.

Twelve-year-old Lee Jennings of Pittsgrove Township was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in late 2002. Because the disease was already progressed, Jennings was immediately placed into intensive chemotherapy.<br><br>Jennings had to be removed from Pittsgrove Middle School and is currently receiving home-schooling. Due to his weakened immune system, Jennings cannot be exposed to other sick children as even those with a common cold could affect Jennings health.

As Congress foams at the mouth over financial fraud perpetrated on Enron shareholders and employees, it's allowing the Environmental Protection Agency to perpetrate a much more costly fraud on all of us.

The researchers had no data on how much fine particulate air pollution was inhaled by even one of the 500,000 study subjects. Instead the researchers simply guessed at how much fine particulates study subjects might have inhaled - more like eeny-meeny-miny-mo than science.
