New health care bill for veterans signed into law

After the various problems and scandals faced by the Department of Veterans Affairs, President Obama signed into law a new heath care bill which would make it easier for veterans to receive government-paid health care.

Months of negotiations in Congress finally led to bipartisan support of the bill upon being passed. According to Politico, before signing the bill, President Obama took the chance to say the support for the bill "doesn't happen often in Congress." The president also took the chance, as he signed the bill, to say he wished he had the chance to sign more bills passed by Congress, joking about the numerous stalemates faced by Congress. President Obama said this bill is the first step in a long process to fix the many problems plaguing the VA. However, the president also highlighted the remaining problems which veterans face everyday including veteran homelessness and the backlog of disability claims throughout the VA.

DEA continues obstructing marijuana research, report says

A new report released by the Drug Policy Alliance and the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, says the DEA has spent the last four decades thwarting marijuana research which carries the potential of reclassification for the drug.

"The DEA has argued for decades that there is insufficient evidence to support rescheduling marijuana," reads the executive summary of the report. "At the same time, it has... acted in a manner intended to systematically impede scientific research." Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, meaning the federal government does not recognize any acceptable uses for the drug, including medicinal uses. The status of Schedule I also means the drugs in this category cannot receive federal funding for research, medicinal or otherwise. Marijuana is joined on the Schedule I tier by peyote, LSD, and heroine.

So, the big news this week is that Apple and Google have launched their watered down "contact-tracing" platforms into the world. Only "contact-tracing" has now become "exposure notification..."

...and judging by all the evidence to-date, they're not going to be effective enough to make a difference. Worse, they introduce a set of dangerous security risks that have not been addressed. False hopes, false starts. Let's clear something up from the start. Contact-tracing is not an opt-in Bluetooth app that might register your proximity to an infected person, under a very limited set of circumstances, including that you're both fully running the app. No, contact tracing is a manually-intensive, surveillance-heavy, privacy-intrusive process where a combination of brute-force measures and meticulous attention to detail, under the purview of well-trained operatives, roots out the spread of infection.

Like organic foods 20­ years ago, the idea of organic cotton is confusing to many of us. It's taken a little longer to catch on because the correlation isn't as direct­. We don't eat cotton fiber (at least we hope you don't!)

In addition to being one of the most widely grown crops in the world, growing conventional cotton is also one of the most chemical-­intensive. These chemicals have tremendous impact on the earth's air, water, soil, and the health of people in cotton-growing areas. They are among the most toxic chemicals as classified by the Environmental Protection Agency. The problem is even worse in developing countries with uninformed consumers, and lack of stable institutions and property rights. In addition to destroying the land, thousands of farmers die from exposure to these chemicals every year.

The long-delayed GOP foreign policy civil war is finally here. For years the Republican Party has fractured over foreign policy, but libertarians and neoconservatives, while vehemently disagreeing on substance, tried to project an air of party cohesion.

Those days are over. "We ignored them and then tried to placate them," said one hawkish Senate Republican foreign policy aide about the libertarians. "If we don't move now [to counterattack], it may be too late in 2016." New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's comments Thursday evening at a gathering of the Republican Governors Association in Aspen, Colo. calling libertarianism "a very dangerous thought" marked an opening salvo of the fight for the Republican Party's identity in an age where a war-weary public wants to focus on the home front. On one side are libertarians like Sen. Rand Paul and others in the Tea Party. On the other, more mainstream conservatives like Christie, Arizona Sen. John McCain and New York Rep. Pete King.

Who says it's the best method to catch the bad guys?

Rabbits hop around but that's not very threatening. Hops on a network, however, are a different game. When a rabbit hops on a lawn, each hop adds a yard or so. Not so in a network topology. In a network, the difference between one and two hops is huge. The difference between two and three hops is humongous because the effect of "hops" on traversing a network is exponential rather than additive.
