"Axvml The Fool"

©1993 Shawn Kendrick Hall

This is the tale of the life of a fool,
a traveling bard with bells on him too.
A long time ago in a land far away,
lived a fool with an urge that sent him headway.

Axvml, the name of the lad set out,
for the sun motley clad.
Bells on his head and lute in hand,
he went far and away to many a land.

One moonlit eve as he passed by the sea
A virgin in chains at a rock spied he.
And being a fool of honor and guile
ere some would call an embicile.

He swiftly ran to give her his aid
without a thought of his getting laid.
Manacles of steel held her in place,
as a blush of temptation crossed his face.

But being a fool of honor and chaste,
he worked instead at the chains with haste.
Using the buckle of his smock
he craftilly broke open the lock.

Moments later the chains fell away
Axvml thought he'd saved the day.
Behind him though were a mighty roar
that shook the trees and rattled the floor.

He looked behind him and what did he spy
but a giant dragon as tall as the sky.
The virgin as virgins are prone to do
let out a scream and fainted too.

Axvml readied sunshine his staff
preparing to ram it up the dragons ass.
The dragon though laughed a hideous laugh
as fire and steam scorched Axvml's staff.

Axvml remembered the song of the east
and drew up his lute to charm the beast.
A lute never were much Axvml's best
and woe to him who'd play the song of the west.

The beast as it heard the (not musically inclined?)
fool wail fell fast to the earth dead as a doornail.
The fool in triumph having saved the day
awakened the virgin and swiftly made way.

As they reached her kingdom and were met by the king
a tale of his journeys he began to sing.
The king would have given all the gold in his lands
and offered the warrior his daughters hand.

Until he heard that awful wail
decided instead to throw the fool in jail.
(Disturbing the peace you know)
And so the lesson here that ought be learned,
is a fools no fool when he might get burned.
