"If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."
                                             -- George Washington

"If we stuck to the Constitution as written, we would have: no federal meddling in our schools; no Federal Reserve; no U.S. membership in the UN; no gun control; and no foreign aid.

We would have no welfare for big corporations, or the "poor"; no American troops in 100 foreign countries; no NAFTA, GATT, or "fast-track"; no arrogant federal judges usurping states rights; no attacks on private property; no income tax. We could get rid of most of the cabinet departments, most of the agencies, and most of the budget."

Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom by Dr. Ron Paul

"Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens' lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons."
                                             -- Congressman Ron Paul

"The government is best which governs least."

As the left and President Obama have so graciously pointed out, civility is essential to our national discourse. At a press conference in February 2009, Obama said: "I think that, over time, people respond to civility and--and rational argument."

He reaffirmed his commitment to civility by his pointed statements after Rush Limbaugh's comments regarding Sandra Fluke. Yet the left is not immune from incivility. In fact, the left is significantly more uncivil on a regular basis than the right. As our star defendant, we bring you the man who gets a tingle up his leg when Barack Obama speaks: MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

A Texas father who spent nearly 25 years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit is pressing for tougher penalties targeting prosecutors who withhold evidence.

"This isn't about me because my case is finished," Michael Morton said during an interview Thursday with The Associated Press. "But there's no reason it can't happen to you or to anyone." Morton was convicted in the fatal 1986 beating of his wife by a prosecutor who Morton and his attorneys believe knowingly withheld critical evidence.

A special investigation will determine if a former prosecutor who is now a judge hid evidence in a trial that sent a man wrongly convicted of his wife's murder to prison for nearly 25 years, Texas' chief justice ordered Thursday.

A proceeding known as a "court of inquiry" will determine whether Judge Ken Anderson, when he was a district attorney, failed to turn over all documents that would have supported the defendant's claims of innocence and whether he tampered with evidence and court records, according to the order signed by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson.

A Texas board was set to decide Thursday whether the state will issue specialty license plates featuring the Confederate battle flag, a plan Gov. Rick Perry has said he opposes but will not block.

All nine members of the Department of Motor Vehicles board were appointed by the Republican governor, who is seeking the GOP presidential nomination and has previously defended the historical value of Confederacy symbols. But when asked about the proposed plates last month, Perry said "we don't need to be opening old wounds."

Google has rolled out yet another update to their troubled search engine algorithms.

This update, belatedly dubbed "Penguin", was supposedly targeted towards sites which engaged in spammy SEO tactics, but instead it appears to have penalized a wide range of legitimate and high quality web sites. Some of the biggest losers are sites many Tech-FAQ readers know well, including...

Dan Perkins, aka Tom Tomorrow, penned the cartoon in 1994 for Spin magazine.

At the time, the cartoon might have seemed a little hysterical. Remember, this was pre-warrantless-wiretapping, pre-Guantanamo, pre-Snowden, and pre-Obama-assassinating-American-citizens-with-drones, sans trial. Rather, the context for the cartoon was a new NSA gadget called the "Clipper chip" that would have made it easier for government officials to listen in on phone conversations, provided they had the legal authority to do so. (The technology was never widely adopted, and the NSA soon abandoned it.) Now? Not so hysterical. But hey, at least the third panel isn't strictly accurate, yet.

Look around your classroom and try to spot the nearest homeschooler. If you instinctively focus on the weirdo sitting in the front row, you're probably looking in the wrong direction.

Although it is difficult to believe, homeschooling was banned, except in special cases, in all 50 states as late as 1983. Because of this, you and I represent the first generation truly affected by the modern homeschooling movement. As such, the children who were part of this initial movement now compete with us both in the classroom and in the work force. And more often than not, they have the upper hand in both arenas.

Despite overwhelming public support and support from a clear majority of Vermont's Agriculture Committee, Vermont legislators are dragging their feet on a proposed GMO labeling bill. Why?

Because Monsanto has threatened to sue the state if the bill passes. The popular legislative bill requiring mandatory labels on genetically engineered food (H-722) is languishing in the Vermont House Agriculture Committee, with only four weeks left until the legislature adjourns for the year. Despite thousands of emails and calls from constituents who overwhelmingly support mandatory labeling, despite the fact that a majority (6 to 5) of Agriculture Committee members support passage of the measure, Vermont legislators are holding up the labeling bill and refusing to take a vote.

No matter how tech savvy you are, there are certain things every one of us has to deal with when using a computer-and we don't always deal with them in the most efficient ways.

Here are 10 things that everyone can (and should) learn to keep their computer fast, safe, and easy to use. Here at Lifehacker, we take a lot of the simpler stuff for granted: how to avoid viruses, use keyboard shortcuts, or even just keep your data backed up. Even if you've mastered all of these tricks (and there's a good chance you haven't), you may want to send this along to some of your less computer-savvy friends. After all, the more they know how to do, the less they'll call you for help.
