Elderly pair file $5M suit against SW Va. officers

A $5 million federal lawsuit filed this month in U.S. District Court in Abingdon accuses two Southwest Virginia law enforcement officers of shoving, punching and kicking an elderly man and woman during an incident that allegedly occurred last year.

Pennington Gap Police Officer Nathan A. Kennedy and Virginia State Police Trooper Wesley Williams are both named in the lawsuit, which was filed July 2 by Betty Slagle Minton, 78, and Emory Arnold Robinette, 74, of Pennington Gap. Minton and Robinette are seeking compensatory and punitive damages of $2.5 million each for acts of negligent conduct, grossly negligent conduct, and reckless conduct in which the two officers allegedly took part. The lawsuit requests that the case go before a jury.

The parents of a 16-year-old suicidal boy spoke only with CBS Atlanta News' Wendy Saltzman after their son was gunned down by a police sniper in Cherokee County.

Lisa and Nick Messina said their son was killed at the hands of the officers they called for help. According to his parents, Andrew Messina had a bad day at school and the pressure was so overwhelming, he grabbed a gun and threatened to kill himself. Lisa Messina called the cops in desperation, hoping an officer would come talk to him. But what arrived was an army of deputies, an armored tank and a sniper.

Describing the research that indicates GMOs are harmful to human health and the environment and should be labeled if they are going to be in our food supply. What are GMOs and should I be concerned about them in my food?

GMOs (or "genetically modified organisms") have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This science allows DNA material from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in Nature or result from traditional crossbreeding methods. Doing this provides financial benefits to biotechnology companies and large-scale farming corporations. For instance, seeds can be engineered to be insect resistant and/or herbicide tolerant. Produce can be developed that has a longer shelf life or is shaped to facilitate more efficient transportation. Scientists have even tried to introduce a cold-resisting gene from Arctic fish into tomatoes to prevent them from freezing and thus lengthen their growing season. Hand- in-hand with seed patenting, GE seeds can provide agribusiness with massive profits.

In the wake of a fatal shooting, the security for a D.C. high school was officially turned over to the city’s police department last week. Armed officers will patrol the halls.

This is one more indication of the severe problems haunting the public school system: violence, illegal drugs, the mandating of medication such as Ritalin, low academic achievement, controversial curricula, perceived prejudice against boys.

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states, it is now illegal to record any on-duty police officer.

Even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists. The selection of "shooters" targeted for prosecution do, indeed, suggest a pattern of either reprisal or an attempt to intimidate.

To government, homeschooling resembles a weed that spreads and resists control. To homeschooling parents, it is the flowering of knowledge and values within children who have been abandoned or betrayed by public schools.

A great tension exists between the two perspectives. Homeschooling's continued growth has only heightened it. The federal government has reacted by attempting to increase its control over homeschooling, for example, by pushing for increased regulation of homeschool curricula. But the federal government is hindered by certain factors. For one thing, education is generally the prerogative of individual states. Nevertheless, the federal government can often impose its will by threatening to withhold federal funds from states that do not comply with its measures. But homeschooling parents cannot be threatened by a withdrawal of money they don't receive...

And, if you are not alarmed when you finish reading this, you should be, because there may be something much more sinister afoot at the Department of Labor than most people realize. There has been one sentence, more than others, in the Department of Labor's 160-page proposed rule change that indicates the DOL's expansion of the definition of 'persuader' to mean just about any vendor who has anything to do directly or indirectly with an employer's relationship with employees since activities may implicitly influence the decisions of employees with regard in the exercise of their rights in the workplace. Until now, however, one part of the sentence has been overlooked which, unless addressed, may cause individuals great harm-literally, physical harm.

Alameda Sheriff's Murder Again?

A young man was shot and killed Sunday Morning by an Alameda Sheriff assisting Oakland Police in a search yesterday morning in Oakland.

Oakland Police say the vehicle and Jacorey Calhoun, 23, the person driving it, matched the description of an armed robber from an incident two weeks ago. Oakland Police claim they initially tried to stop the vehicle. An alleged chase ensued, ending in deep east oakland with the car being abandoned and a hours to house search being conducted. An Alameda Sheriff and their K-9 assisted in the search and just before 6 am they found Jacorey and shot and killed him.

A pilot was barred from passing through security at Memphis International Airport last Friday after he refused to submit to a full-body scan or a manual pat down.

Airport officials said Michael Roberts, identified as a pilot for Houston-based ExpressJet Airlines, left the airport after Transportation Security Administration officials asked him to leave.

Christie again vetoes NJ's Internet gambling law

Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill Thursday that would have made New Jersey the third state to legalize gambling over the Internet, but he said he would sign it if it had a 10-year trial period and a higher tax rate on casinos.

It was the second time since 2011 that the Republican governor has vetoed an Internet bill passed by the New Jersey Legislature. But the path Christie laid out toward winning his approval heartened supporters of online gambling, including Atlantic City's 12 casinos, numerous online betting companies and state lawmakers who hope to make the seaside resort a nationwide hub for Internet gambling. Nevada and Delaware have passed laws legalizing Internet betting, which also is going on offshore, untaxed and unregulated.
