In two of the cases, the judges specifically told the Internal Revenue Service that if it has a problem with the outcomes, the solution lies with Congress, not the courts. In the most recent case, a U.S. district judge in Connecticut determined Monday that an arrangement by which General Electric Co., through subsidiaries and partnerships, shifted $310 million in income to two Dutch banks that don't pay U.S. taxes was not a sham and, as a result, GE was entitled to a $62 million tax refund.

Lately, Democratic presidential contender John Kerry has been making laughable attempts to appeal to gun owners, despite his very clear record in favor of gun control.

This would probably be funnier if it weren't for the fact that Bush, too, has a very clear record of undermining the Second Amendment. Most supporters of gun rights seem to be oblivious to this, or at best only dimly aware. Pointing out the failure by Bush to protect the right to bear arms nearly always brings out the question "So you think Kerry would be better?" Obviously only those who agree with Sarah Brady think Kerry would be better on guns, but it would take some considerable effort for Kerry to do worse, as Bush has attacked gun rights in his domestic agenda, by Administration actions in the courts, and in his foreign policy.

A surveillance system that uses 2,000 remote-control cameras and motion-sensing software to spot crimes or terrorist acts as they happen is being planned for the city.

The high-definition, motorized cameras can rotate 360 degrees and include night-vision capability. They will be mounted on buildings and utility poles across the city. The city is also considering allowing private companies to join the network, for a fee. Officials said the system size is nearly limitless.

The reading of the U.S. Constitution turns out to be a rousing crowd pleaser.

The last time I read the U.S. Constitution all the way through was almost fifty years ago, when I was a student at Swarthmore College. My roommate Marc Merson and I were at work on a one-act play (United We Stood); its premise was that an English literature professor had stumbled on the fact that the founding fathers had inadvertently signed the wrong document.

Governor Schwarzenegger this week signed AB 1925, a pro-family bill requiring schools to notify parents when they plan to bring an outside speaker into the classroom to talk about sex education issues.

AB 1925, authored by Assemblyman Ray Haynes, (R-Murrieta) provides parents with more awareness and control over who discusses issues involving sexuality with their children. Beginning January 1, 2005, school districts must send notices to parents at the beginning of the school year about any outside consultants or guest speakers who will come into the classroom to discuss or teach about HIV/AIDS education or sexually related issues.

During the 1998-99 school year, nearly 6,000 S.C. students were home-schooled. It jumped to about 12,600 in 2003-04, according to Carper.

About 13 million U.S. children attend schools other than their assigned public schools - a 45 percent increase since 1993, according to U.S. Department of Education data. Most of that growth is attributed to students attending public schools other than their assigned one.

Mirror editor Piers Morgan is sacked as the newspaper concedes photos of soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.

In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and that it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue. The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR) said the Mirror had endangered British troops by running the pictures. Roger Goodman, of the QLR, said the regiment now felt "vindicated". Mr Goodman added: "It is just a great pity it has taken so long... and that so much damage has been done in the meantime."
