SKorea's economy grows at slowest pace in 3 years

South Korea's economy grew 2 percent in 2012, its weakest performance in three years, and is not expected to rebound strongly this year, the central bank said Thursday.

The Bank of Korea blamed weak growth on a drop in corporate investment and lackluster exports, which offset the government's increased spending on construction projects and welfare. The government spending contributed 0.6 percentage point to the 2012 growth rate. South Korea's economy, Asia's fourth largest, is forecast to improve only modestly this year because demand for exports has been sapped by Europe's debt crisis and an uncertain recovery in the U.S. The central bank earlier this month downgraded its 2013 growth forecast to 2.8 percent from 3.2 percent forecast in October.

In a case some argue could throw open the long-standing secrecy behind police internal investigations, the 4th District Court of Appeals in Springfield has ruled internal affairs files are a public record regardless of the outcome of the probe.

Attorneys specializing in Illinois public records law said Thursday it is the first such ruling of its kind in the state and therefore binding on trial courts statewide. It could also have repercussions for long-running complaints about Chicago police brutality.

Tiny computer chips used for tracking food, tickets and other items are getting even smaller. Hitachi (HIT), recently showed off radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips that are just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches and look like bits of powder.

(They're thin enough to be embedded in a piece of paper, company spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi said Thursday. The technology is already widely used to track and identify items, such as monitoring the distribution of food products or guarding against forgery of concert tickets.

I want to eat cows. I want to eat ribs, burgers, steaks and even bottom round roast (the butt). I would love to swim in the fluffy meat pillows of steak goodness, indulging my continuously growing gluttony.

For the typical family of suburbia, waking up at 7 a.m. to go to work, grabbing a convenience-laden breakfast burrito from McDonald's with a side of coffee water is second nature. I get it. Do I care what you eat? No. I couldn't care less, and the last thing I want to do is make you feel guilty. But, what you eat effects what I eat.

New health care bill for veterans signed into law

After the various problems and scandals faced by the Department of Veterans Affairs, President Obama signed into law a new heath care bill which would make it easier for veterans to receive government-paid health care.

Months of negotiations in Congress finally led to bipartisan support of the bill upon being passed. According to Politico, before signing the bill, President Obama took the chance to say the support for the bill "doesn't happen often in Congress." The president also took the chance, as he signed the bill, to say he wished he had the chance to sign more bills passed by Congress, joking about the numerous stalemates faced by Congress. President Obama said this bill is the first step in a long process to fix the many problems plaguing the VA. However, the president also highlighted the remaining problems which veterans face everyday including veteran homelessness and the backlog of disability claims throughout the VA.

SWAT teams claim private company status

Prior to the ACLU report on the increasing militarization of police, Massachusetts police offices replied to requests for information saying the SWAT teams in the state are private corporations, exempting them from open records laws.

These SWAT teams are supervised by what are called Law Enforcement Councils, or LECs. The LECs are overseen by an executive board of police chiefs from various local police and sheriff's departments and funded by the various law enforcement offices in the surrounding area. Sometimes, the offices which fund these LECs are headed by the same chiefs who sit on the board. Funding for an LEC is collected from the departments which make up the LEC, in the form of an annual membership fee. This fee grants the department access to information gathered by other member departments, and also allows the departments the use of a regionalized SWAT team as opposed to a localized team.

DEA continues obstructing marijuana research, report says

A new report released by the Drug Policy Alliance and the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, says the DEA has spent the last four decades thwarting marijuana research which carries the potential of reclassification for the drug.

"The DEA has argued for decades that there is insufficient evidence to support rescheduling marijuana," reads the executive summary of the report. "At the same time, it has... acted in a manner intended to systematically impede scientific research." Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, meaning the federal government does not recognize any acceptable uses for the drug, including medicinal uses. The status of Schedule I also means the drugs in this category cannot receive federal funding for research, medicinal or otherwise. Marijuana is joined on the Schedule I tier by peyote, LSD, and heroine.
