U.S. Postal Service Logging All Mail for Law Enforcement

Leslie James Pickering noticed something odd in his mail last September: A handwritten card, apparently delivered by mistake, with instructions for postal workers to pay special attention to the letters and packages sent to his home.

"Show all mail to supv" - supervisor - "for copying prior to going out on the street," read the card. It included Mr. Pickering's name, address and the type of mail that needed to be monitored. The word "confidential" was highlighted in green. "It was a bit of a shock to see it," said Mr. Pickering, who owns a small bookstore in Buffalo. More than a decade ago, he was a spokesman for the Earth Liberation Front, a radical environmental group labeled eco-terrorists by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Postal officials subsequently confirmed they were indeed tracking Mr. Pickering's mail but told him nothing else.

Man left in solitary confinement for 2 years gets $15.5 million settlement

A man who spent 22 long months in solitary confinement in a New Mexico jail, neglected to the point where he was forced to pull out his own tooth because he said he wasn't allowed to see a dentist, will receive $15.5 million for the ordeal.

The settlement with Dona Ana County, N.M., falls short of the $22 million that Stephen Slevin, 59, and his attorney had asked for, but is still one of the largest prisoner civil rights payouts in U.S. history. "His mental health has been severely compromised from the time he was in that facility. That continues to be the same. No amount of money will bring back what they took away from him," Matt Coyte, Slevin's Albuquerque-based attorney, said on Wednesday. "But it's nice to be able to get him some money so he can improve where he is in life and move on."

EU beer brewers refuse to swallow French suds tax

France, the land of wine, is planning heavy taxes on beer, and that is not going down well with brewers - even in other nations.

President Francois Hollande is pushing through legislation to increase taxes on beer by 160 percent to help fund struggling social programs as France tries to contain a budget deficit hit hard by the economic crisis. The tax would affect local brews and the 30 percent of imported beer the French drink. The change means the price of a beer will increase by about 20 percent in bars and supermarkets, said Jacqueline Lariven, spokeswoman for the French brewer's federation Brasseurs de France.

phpMyAdmin corrupted copy on Korean mirror server

On September 25th, SourceForge became aware of a corrupted copy of phpMyAdmin being served from the 'cdnetworks-kr-1' mirror in Korea. This mirror was immediately removed from rotation.

The mirror provider has confirmed the attack vector has been identified and is limited to their mirror; with exploit having occurred on or around September 22nd. Through validation we have confirmed the corrupted file (a modified copy of phpMyAdmin-3.5.2.2-all-languages.zip) was served only via the 'cdnetworks-kr-1' mirror. While we believe that only one file was modified on the 'cdnetworks-kr-1' mirror, we are conducting additional validation to confirm and will provide update once this process concludes. The mirror remains out of rotation.

Imagine if a new, deadly influenza virus broke out and authorities determined that somehow a chemical element in pork helped boost one's immune response, making the pork consumer less than half as likely to contract the illness.

Jews and Muslims, of course, have firm laws against eating pork. Even in the midst of an epidemic, imagine the outcry if the government told a Muslim-owned, or kosher-Jewish, restaurant that it must provide all diners with the option of a small, free serving of pork during the crisis. Civil libertarians would be up in arms, especially over the affront to Muslims. They would point out that pork is readily available elsewhere, that Muslims are (supposedly) an embattled minority within the United States, and that forcing somebody to violate an unambiguous tenet of his faith is an abominable abridgement of human rights and of the Constitution's First Amendment. They would be right.

House Rep. Henry Bonilla, a founding member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has taken back his demand that Rep. Corrine Brown resign her seat in Congress for remarks she made accusing the Bush administration of racism in its Haiti policy.

She said Republican leaders were "racist" in their policies toward the Caribbean nation, which is almost entirely black, and called the president's representatives "a bunch of white men."

California patients sue to get state law enforcement agencies to return almost $1 million worth of seized marijuana.

In a mass legal action on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 38 California medical marijuana patients filed simultaneous lawsuits demanding that state law enforcement entities return almost $1 million worth of pot seized by police in recent years. California voters approved the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in 1996, but recalcitrant law enforcement organizations continue to seize marijuana from patients.

United Nations Report Declares Internet Access a Human Right

The United Nations has declared cutting off access to the Internet a human rights violation, according to a report by Wired.

The report released Friday by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection to Freedom of Opinion and Expression came just as Syria's Internet was disconnected. According to a report by the Associated Press, authorities have cut off Internet access before in areas of military operations but Friday's outage was more widespread. US security firm Renesys said that two-thirds of all Syrian networks were unavailable. These outages recall the earlier Egypt Internet outages in January where more than 88 percent of ISPs were cut off.
