iOS 7: why I'm finally dumping my iPhone for an Android

My iPhone lies there like a dead fish, telling me nothing. If you believe the weather and clock icons on my iPhone, the temperature and time of day haven't changed for 18 months.

I think I figured out what's going on with iOS 7. Sir Jony has been trapped in a monochromatic hardware world of his own making for so long that now that he's allowed to meddle in software, he's pulled out that box of Crayolas he's kept locked in the bottom drawer and let loose his inner Wonderland. I'll get back to iOS 7 in a minute. First, let me tell you about our phones. I've been using iPhones since a month after the iPhone app store opened back in 2008. After five years, I've decided to dump my daily driver (an iPhone 4S) for a hot new Samsung S4. In fact, we're getting two of them.

ASUS will be offering the ability to run Android apps on its Windows PCs due to a deal with Bluestacks. This has implications for Windows 8 as it allows Android apps to run out of the box.

PC-maker ASUS has signed a deal with Bluestacks to include its Android app player on ASUS PCs as reported by AllThingsD. Bluestacks makes it possible to run top Android apps on the Windows desktop. This deal has major implications for ASUS, Bluestacks, and even Microsoft with Windows 8 on the horizon. The deal gives ASUS customers six months of free access to Android apps on their new Windows PCs.

Electronic ID chips have found their way into everything from shavers to prison inmates. In September, with the Gulf Coast reeling from Katrina, some people found an entirely new use for the technology: identifying the dead.

Gary Hargrove, coroner of Mississippi's Harrison County, began injecting radio frequency identification (RFID) chips into cadavers to cope with the mounting body count. He said the chips, supplied by a Florida company called VeriChip, helped the county identify and return storm victims to their families without mix-ups. The county also injected the chips into bodies dislodged from graves during flooding.

While tobacco was introduced to the world by America in 1492, some states in the U.S are now considering a ban on smoking in cars and even homes.

Nineteen states and the administrators of nearly 2,300 cities are passing a law to ban smoking in as many places as possible. While America is doing its utmost to protect its own citizens from the lethal effects of tobacco, it backs the policy of selling tobacco to third-world countries. Ohio recently passed a law banning smoking in workplaces and public places. Even those smoking outside their workplaces will be fined $100.

If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines, including Google, do retain this information.

I've thought about Schneier's response (that people want privacy for a whole host of reasons, like when we make love, sing in the shower, and do things that are totally legal at the time of law) for some time now and I have come to this conclusion...

A few years ago when I was throwing around the idea of homeschooling my daughter, I had a discussion with a friend of mine over coffee and goldfish crackers while our kids played with wooden trains.

It was a reasonable assumption. After all, I'm an introverted artist and writer living rurally with extended family and plenty of bizarre thoughts floating around in my head. Basically, I'm a weirdo. But no, I wasn't homeschooled. I was educated in the public school system. That's right Mrs. Warnica, what I am today is all on you.

It was later determined that she was not the suspect they were looking for, nor was the vehicle the one they were looking for. The law requires all impounds be held a minimum of 30 days. Stockton Police sold this young woman's car before that 30 days was reached.

Sacramento sheriff's deputies have been playing NSA. They tool around town with suitcase-sized StingRay surveillance devices in their squad cars, scooping up cellphone data from whomever happens to be within a one-mile radius.

The deputies have reportedly been doing their shady business without warrants, and dozens of law enforcement agencies nationwide may be doing likewise. But hey, what's the big deal? After all, the feds say it's OK. Not only that, but federal agents have even been telling local officers to keep their StingRay shenanigans hush hush. If a judge asks, the feds advise locals to say they obtained evidence, not from a StingRay, but from a "confidential source."
