Sonora Pass was closed briefly after the storms, but was opened a couple days later. To tell you the truth, I'm really surprised they have opened it for Memorial Day. This is a maximum enforcement weekend though, and the police are out in force.

The tourists were out in droves today. I hope the local businesses are busy this weekend. I can't believe how many people are still wearing masks. They really do more harm that good and I've heard that from more that one prominent physician. Wearing masks may increase your risk of coronavirus infection, expert says.

The Apple-Google contact tracing system won't work. It still deserves praise.

So, the big news this week is that Apple and Google have launched their watered down "contact-tracing" platforms into the world. Only "contact-tracing" has now become "exposure notification..."

...and judging by all the evidence to-date, they're not going to be effective enough to make a difference. Worse, they introduce a set of dangerous security risks that have not been addressed. False hopes, false starts. Let's clear something up from the start. Contact-tracing is not an opt-in Bluetooth app that might register your proximity to an infected person, under a very limited set of circumstances, including that you're both fully running the app. No, contact tracing is a manually-intensive, surveillance-heavy, privacy-intrusive process where a combination of brute-force measures and meticulous attention to detail, under the purview of well-trained operatives, roots out the spread of infection.

I have spent the last few years working on Facebook, neglecting my own work, I'm ashamed to admit. Facebook finally banned me, and I am very glad they did, because otherwise I might never have left.

I am totally against censorship. Do you want to know what I did to get banned? I posted this meme and they took it down, so I posted it again. Normally, after posting the second time they would leave it be, but not this time. They removed it again. So, I put it back up and I was banned from Facebook. All my content, all my uploads and all discussion and posts I've made over the last decade to Facebook were removed.

Post Office Delays

The post office is shorthanded. They're hiring 500 new workers to meet the demand.

There are signs posted not to expect mail delivery to your post office box until 2:00 p.m. daily. This will be for every day until further notice. On the way I drove past Twain Harte Lumber and I can't remember the last time I drove past and saw every single parking space full, but they were.

Thirty-three percent of high school seniors say they would defer or cancel an admittance rather than attend an all-online college. Plus results from other surveys of students and parents.

Ninety-five percent said that they would honor commitments made to colleges that plan to reopen in the fall with social distancing measures in place. But the survey also indicated that the later an institution announces its policy, the more apprehension students will have about it. The California State University system announced this month that most classes in the fall would be online. But many other colleges -- including such prominent institutions as the University of Texas at Austin -- are planning for in-person classes in the fall. Both approaches are being criticized by some -- Cal State for being too fearful of what might happen and the campuses that are opening for taking a big risk with student and employee health.

Hundreds of Missouri residents have had their personal details shared online after the publication of a document that recorded reports made against those flouting lockdown measures.

The names and addresses of almost 900 people were shared on Facebook to name-and-shame them after authorities had released the data following a media request under the state's 'Sunshine Law', which requires authorities to release information submitted to public agencies.

Governors and mayors across the nation have claimed, liberally, that their emergency powers allow them to ban large groups during the coronavirus pandemic.

They don't want groups gathering in malls, movie theaters or even churches, despite the constitutional protection of religious rights. Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver noted Kansas City is requiring that churches "submit list of members and attendees along with their names, addresses and telephone numbers to city officials for tracking and surveillance purposes."

Let the government-pressed coronavirus-tied blood collections of citizens begin. And begin they have.

They have in Georgia at least, where the state's Department of Public Health recently announced, in cooperation with both Fulton County and Dekalb counties' Boards of Health, that "to learn more about the spread of COVID-19," an "investigation" has commenced - and it's an "investigation" that's leading government officials to make random stops at randomly selected residences and ask random citizens for, get this, their blood.

I'll try to keep this respectful but it's not easy because the masks that so many of you are so proudly wearing are the pinnacle of stupidity and I just don't know how to be nice about communicating that.

I know we're all desperate to stay positive. And I know most Americans don't have the time or energy to really look past the top-line news they see and hear. And I know the media, academia and Hollywood are very effective at shaping our impressions of social and political goings-on. And I know politicians on both sides of the aisle are congratulating you for "doing your part" to help beat the COVID-19 virus. And I know that makes you feel good at a time we could all really use some lifting up.
