"If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

"If we stuck to the Constitution as written, we would have: no federal meddling in our schools; no Federal Reserve; no U.S. membership in the UN; no gun control; and no foreign aid.

We would have no welfare for big corporations, or the "poor"; no American troops in 100 foreign countries; no NAFTA, GATT, or "fast-track"; no arrogant federal judges usurping states rights; no attacks on private property; no income tax. We could get rid of most of the cabinet departments, most of the agencies, and most of the budget."

Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom by Dr. Ron Paul

"Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens' lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons."
                                             -- Congressman Ron Paul

The Fresno father who sued the county after his son's death has now settled the case. Joseph Hudson claimed Child Protective Services mishandled the case and allowed his son to die.

It took seven years to get to this point, and Hudson said it's taken a toll on him beyond just what he suffered when his son was killed. Now, he intends to use the money he's getting to create a place where they'll train mandatory reporters to prevent child abuse.

The man in charge, Colonel Jim Previtera, took charge as he walked us through the Orient Road Jail. The colonel began in the carport, where, he said, "The inmates will be unloaded, they will be searched and walked through a metal detector which has been added for this event." The entire facility has been transformed. At around noon Wednesday, the last of the inmates, excluding a dozen or so trustees prepared to handle cooking and cleaning duties, were moved out to nearby Falkenburg Road Jail. An El Monte family reached out to police for help, and an officer shot one of their beloved dogs.

The family told Eyewitness News they contacted the El Monte Police Department after their 14-year-old son ran away from home. Officers came to the house to get a picture of the boy -- but the family told them to call ahead of time so they could put away their two dogs. They say police never contacted them and ignored a "beware of dog" on the front gate. "They just came in our door without calling us or anything and then our dog ran up to the police and the police shot it," said Chi Nguyen, 11.

There's a question of constitutional rights that's increasingly being raised around the country.

The family of a New Jersey teenager is suing a local police department claiming officers arrested the boy simply because he was videotaping a confrontation with cops. 15-year-old Austin DeCaro never imagined his habit of taking his camcorder everywhere would come in so handy on an evening several months ago. "He got out of a car and said, 'All of you get on the curb,' and none of us knew what to do, so I flipped on my camera," said Austin DeCaro, a teenage videographer, "I saw this random guy telling us to sit on the curb and I didn't know if he was a cop or not. I decided I should record it."
