Intel Security Bulletin: SIEM ESM, ESMREC, and ESMLM updates fix authentication bypass vulnerability

A specially crafted username can bypass SIEM ESM authentication (password is not validated) if the ESM is configured to use Active Directory or LDAP authentication sources. This can result in the attacker gaining NGCP (master user) access to the ESM.

McAfee Enterprise Security Manager (ESM), Enterprise Security Manager/Log Manager (ESMLM), and Enterprise Security Manager/Receiver (ESMREC) 9.3.x before 9.3.2MR19, 9.4.x before 9.4.2MR9, and 9.5.x before 9.5.0MR8, when configured to use Active Directory or LDAP authentication sources, allow remote attackers to bypass authentication by logging in with the username "NGCP|NGCP|NGCP;" and any password.

A New Jersey medical facility will pay $3.6 million to settlement a federal lawsuit over allegations that it billed for tests that weren't medically necessary, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman recently said.

Garden State Cardiovascular Specialists P.C., which operated several facilities in the sate under the name NJ MedCare and NJ Heart, allegedly sent in Medicare claims for certain cardiology diagnostic tests and procedures, external counterpulsation and cardiac catheterizations, which weren't necessary for the patients, Fishman said. The company's principals, Jasjit Walia and Preet Randhawa were also named in the lawsuit.

Senate blocks Patriot Act extension

The Senate struggled to prevent an interruption in critical government surveillance programs early Saturday, rejecting both a House-passed bill and a short-term extension of the USA Patriot Act.

The White House has pressured the Senate to back the House bill, which would end the National Security Agency's bulk collection of domestic phone records. Instead, the records would remain with telephone companies subject to a case-by-case review. The vote was 57-42, short of the 60-vote threshold to move ahead.

According to the California Department of Public Health's latest measles surveillance report (3/6/15), since December of 2014, there have been 132 confirmed measles cases reported in California residents out of a population of 38.8 million. 40 cases visited Disneyland during the period in question. 81% were not hospitalized. 56% were over the age of twenty. 18% were between the ages of five to nineteen. 19 cases were between the ages of one through four. 15 cases were under the age of one. This affected exactly 34 kids from birth to age four. Since the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in December of 2012, there have been 109 school shootings and no legislation. There is no measles epidemic. There is, however, an epidemic of vaccine legislation.

Secret 'BADASS' Intelligence Program Spied on Smartphones

British and Canadian spy agencies accumulated sensitive data on smartphone users, including location, app preferences, and unique device identifiers, by piggybacking on ubiquitous software from advertising and analytics companies.

The document, included in a trove of Snowden material released by Der Spiegel on January 17, outlines a secret program run by the intelligence agencies called BADASS. The German newsweekly did not write about the BADASS document, attaching it to a broader article on cyberwarfare. According to The Intercept's analysis of the document, intelligence agents applied BADASS software filters to streams of intercepted internet traffic, plucking from that traffic unencrypted uploads from smartphones to servers run by advertising and analytics companies.
