Smart meters are spying devices. Not breaking news? Likely not for those of us who have researched the issue for quite a long while, but an admission by those who make the devices is rather shocking.

That is exactly what has happened, as SmartGridNews, a website supported by the high-tech meter industry, acknowledged that smart meters are gathering private information on homeowners. Smart meters utilize wireless technology and instantly tell power companies how much electricity a home is using, and even can report on the power usage by individual appliances, as Smart Grid News said. Smart meters also can literally control newer household appliances that have the capability to communicate with the device. "One of the next areas of value comes from taking smart meter data and 'disaggregating' it to tell us exactly how customers are using electricity," reads a new story on the website. "Do external devices already do this? Sure. Just as progress in the smart phone world reduced the need for external devices (cameras, alarm clocks, radios, pedometers, navigation systems, etc.) the ability to get accurate, appliance level feedback, without the need to invest in external hardware, is the next step in the world of smart meters."

In this case, a hacker figured out how to control certain home networks to mine for a computer currency called Dogecoin, netting over half a million dollars in a matter of months. The hacker's exploits were documented by Dell's security team, which points out that the hacker used a competitor's computer storage product to do the dirty work. The Dell team traced the likely culprit to a German-speaking person who goes by the code-name of "Folio" on GitHub.

The Internal Revenue Service is required by federal law to keep records of all agency emails and to print out hard copies of the emails to make sure they get saved in the event of a computer glitch.

The IRS recently claimed that it lost 24,000 of 67,000 emails that ex-official Lois Lerner sent between 2009 and 2011, due to a computer crash. The IRS, which agreed to turn over all of Lerner's emails to the House Committee on Ways and Means, specifically lost emails Lerner sent to other Obama administration agencies and the White House. Lerner is a major figure in the targeting scandal that has hit the IRS. "The [Federal Records Act] requires agencies to make and preserve records of agency decisions, policies, and essential transactions, and to take steps to safeguard against the loss of agency records," said House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, who subpoenaed IRS Commissioner John Koskinen Monday.

OK, this is beyond reprehensible. It's now time to completely dismantle the IRS and possibly begin impeachment proceedings against the President. What's obvious is that what's in those emails is far worse than the uproar resulting from claims the emails have been lost. The Obama administration has so politicized the IRS and other agencies they can no longer be trusted to be fair and impartial.

The Internal Revenue Service has told Congress that many of the emails to and from Lois Lerner were lost in a computer crash in 2011.

"You've never heard of a computer crashing before?" White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Monday, when a reporter asked if that was a "reasonable explanation." "I think it's entirely reasonable, because it's the truth and it's a fact, and speculation otherwise I think is indicative of the kinds of conspiracies that are propagated around this story," Earnest said. "The fact of the matter is, 67,000 e-mails either sent by or received by Lois Lerner have been provided to Congress. So if we are trying to hide Lois Lerner's e-mails from congressional oversight, there's a pretty large loophole. Thousands of those e-mails actually relate to the time period covered by the hard drive crash that you referred to."

Should it be considered a crime or free speech when a person threatens to kill someone on social media?

Four years ago, Anthony Elonis took to Facebook and posted a public note to his estranged wife, according to the Associated Press. "There's one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you," he wrote. "I'm not going to rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts." Needless to say this post and others like it alarmed Elonis' former employer, who alerted the authorities about these social media musings, according to the Associated Press. After FBI agents visited his home, Elonis got on Facebook again and wrote, "Little agent lady stood so close, took all the strength I had not to turn the (woman) ghost. Pull my knife, flick my wrist and slit her throat."
