U.S. Geological Survey lab worker faked test results, investigators say

A worker at a federal laboratory in Colorado intentionally manipulated test results for years, possibly tainting research that includes toxic metals in the Everglades, uranium near the Grand Canyon and coal in Afghanistan, investigators say.

The falsified data from a U.S. Geological Survey lab may have affected 24 coal, water and environmental research projects costing a total of $108 million, according to a report released recently by the Interior Department's inspector general. USGS spokeswoman Anne-Berry Wade said Thursday the agency isn't sure why the employee falsified the results of chemical analyses but said it wasn't for personal gain or "any nefarious reason."

Gov. Jerry Brown signed six stringent gun-control measures Friday that will require people to turn in high-capacity magazines and mandate background checks for ammunition sales, as California Democrats seek to strengthen gun laws.

Brown vetoed five other bills, including requirement to register homemade firearms and report lost or stolen weapons to authorities. The Democratic governor's action is consistent with his mixed record on gun control . Some of the enacted bills duplicate provisions of a November ballot measure by Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. Some of the vetoed measures also appear in Newsom's initiative.

The Supreme Court ruling in Utah v Strieff awarded the police total freedom to stop any citizen, at any time, to do whatever they desire.

The Supreme Court determined that the "poisonous fruit" of a police officer's stop of a citizen can be used against them at trial. This has wiped out, in reality, any constitutional protection you thought you had. This is a sad day for the United States, for the Supreme Court has officially created a full-blown police state and clearly has no intention of honoring why this nation began the entire American Revolution - to prevent illegal searches that allowed the king to look for anything he could use to prosecute citizens.

Relentless crackdown on journalists and media outlets in Turkey is not news. But the censorship has taken a whole new level last week when a Turkish court stripped a prominent journalist of legal rights over her two children for publishing a video.

Arzu Yildiz, an unwavering journalist mostly reporting about court battles and a fierce critic of the government, was also given a 20-month prison sentence for publishing the video on YouTube last year. The video is a two-hour long court defense of a prosecutor who intercepted a truck in southern Turkey full of arms heading toward a Syrian territory held by Ahrar al-Sham, an Islamist extremist group.

Small rally seeks big reforms for child protection

HELENA - Eight people with a Great Falls-based group spent nearly two hours Wednesday standing at a Helena intersection calling for more reforms to the state's Child and Family Services division and to protest recent findings by a state panel.

"We need to change the system because it's destroying families," said Georgia Miller, a member of Grandparents Protection Services, a community-based group of mostly grandparents who have held rallies before to draw attention to the issue. Wednesday's rally was at Montana and Custer avenues.

Roughly 30 people on Sunday gathered outside the Passaic County courthouse in Paterson for a rally against alleged corruption in New Jersey's family court system.

The rally primarily centered around the case of a Parsippany man, Tobia Ippolito, 51, who said he was subjected to "biased intimidation, official misconduct, and deprivation of civil rights" by several judges in Morris County during divorce proceedings in 2012.

A former employee accused Wells Fargo & Co of instructing workers at a call center to refrain from telling customers about lost deeds or other missing documents, and of firing the worker who called the policy unethical.

Duke Tran, who was a customer service specialist at the bank, says that his supervisor berated him for telling a husband and wife that their loan contract was missing from an internal system. Tran and others later received an email instructing them not to tell customers about situations "where we have a lost contract, deed, any type of document, really, but especially when it relates to securing a property," according to a copy of the email filed with the lawsuit.

Climate change is not only a major issue in the world today, but we are beginning to experience the results of the change at a seemingly alarming rate.

New research on oxygen levels in the world's oceans has just been published, and with sea waters warming, it was noted there has been a drop in the oxygen levels in a number of oceans. This is not good. The consequences of a warming ocean are already being seen, in the bleaching of our coral reefs, particularly Australia's Great Barrier Reef. We have also seen the die-off of innumerable sea creatures due to the warming waters encouraging the growth of toxic algae and the northward movement of many ocean creatures looking for colder waters.

THE MASSACHUSETTS ORGANIZATION responsible for running the state's child welfare system has had four different names over a period of 40 years, which is not a sign of success.

Each change was prompted by widespread concern with the way the agency did its work. Extensive media coverage of terrible incidents involving vulnerable children despoiled the organization's reputation to the point where a name change seemed a necessary part of any rehabilitation.
