Politics in the News

Whether you are a libertarian, conservative, NRA member or simply a citizen concerned with today's political climate, you will find news items of interest and relevance on Reliable Answers "Politics in the News."

What message are our legislators sending to voters, when they publicly admit they haven't done their job? How many bills are passed each year that policymakers haven't even bothered to read? This is disgraceful. This is called dereliction of duties and we must demand a stop to this practice.

"In many of the cases we documented, there was no threat until the FBI showed up and helped turn people into terrorists."

A new report has revealed a disturbing set of tactics used in the pursuit of domestic terrorism in the USA. Among the findings was the fact that the FBI directly and repeatedly involves itself in planning a large percentage of foiled terror plots - often by convincing impressionable or mentally disabled people to join FBI plots, then arresting them. Human Rights Watch published the 214-page report, titled "Illusion of Justice: Human Rights Abuses in US Terrorism Prosecutions." It documents a number of cases which the group describes as being marred by overly-aggressive prosecution, entrapment, and draconian treatment of prisoners.

A 5:30 a.m. raid turned deadly when a homeowner opened fire on people trying to break into his home.

A police officer suffered fatal injuries while performing a pre-dawn no-knock raid on a local residence to search for drugs. Several officers were shot by a resident as they tried to enter an apartment through a ground-level window under the cover of darkness. Detective Charles "Chuck" Dinwiddie, an 18-year veteran of the department - died two days after being shot on Friday morning. Approximately 5:30 a.m. on May 9th, the Killeen Police Department sent its SWAT team to execute a surprise raid on a middle-aged couple because they allegedly possessed substances without government permission.

America hasn't forgotten about Operation Fast and Furious, an ATF/DOJ gunwalking scheme that set up "straw buyers" to transport "legally" purchased rifles from US gun dealers across the border to the Mexican cartels.

The entire scheme was a covert push for President Obama's anti-gun agenda, but it backfired and resulted in the murders of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and hundreds, if not thousands of innocent Mexican civilian victims. The ensuing coverup of the scandal found Obama declaring Executive Privilege over relevant documents, and Attorney General Eric Holder being held in contempt of Congress for his arrogance and uncooperative attitude.

The Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, was duly passed by Congress in 2010, Democrat shenanigans notwithstanding.

Since that time, President Obama and his administration have made numerous rule changes and delays to various aspects of the law, all without Congress. Many view that as a violation of the Constitution. The GOP-led House of Representatives has determined that Obama's unilateral changes to the healthcare law are an "abuse of power", and a Committee decided earlier that the House should sue Obama for overreaching the boundaries of his office.

An Illinois cop watcher was walking to his car after work when he saw something very fishy going on, so he pulled out his camera to hold the police accountable.

"I noticed the officer open the side door of the minivan which I found highly unusual with the driver still in her seat. This prompted me to get my video camera. I walked up to the rail and started recording, almost immediately I was accosted." The man filming is immediately approached by belligerent officers in plainclothes. They begin to badger him, calling him an asshole, and telling him to "get the fuck out of here." The cops blatantly lie to the man and tell him that they will take his camera for "evidence" despite there having been no crime committed.

The AP received an email from the White House on Wednesday which they were not supposed to see. The email contained talking points on a 6,300 page Senate report which revealed information about the CIA's interrogation program, as well as secret prisons.

The email also exposed how the CIA withheld this information from US officials and then-Secretary of State Colin Powell. Additionally, US ambassadors at the time were instructed to keep their mouths closed about the interrogations of terrorists taking place and about "black sites" set up in other countries.

The House on Wednesday approved a highly contentious lawsuit against President Obama over his alleged abuse of executive power, teeing up an election-year legal battle sure to spill onto the midterm campaign trail.

The House backed the lawsuit resolution on a vote of 225-201, with all Democrats opposed. Republicans say the lawsuit is necessary to keep the president in constitutional check, after he allegedly exceeded his authority with unilateral changes to the Affordable Care Act. Democrats branded the effort a political charade aimed at stirring up GOP voters for this fall's congressional elections. They also said it's an effort by top Republicans to mollify conservatives who want Obama to be impeached -- something House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he has no plans to do.

Following an electrifying encounter with law enforcement Wednesday that ended with Hawkes being charged with resisting arrest and failing to obey an officer, the candidate is free on $300 bail and says he is "absolutely" still running for office.

Furthermore, the potential future mayor of Maui says he's going to sue the police department over his latest run in with the law and, once elected, will order cops to discontinue using their stun guns. "Tasers are a violation of our human rights," the mayoral hopeful told KITV News this week. "Maui Police Department will be the first police department to ban the user of Tasers."

Putting economies on an energy diet is not the way to fight climate change.

Environmentalists had a global meltdown last week after Australia scrapped its carbon tax. They denounced the move as "retrograde" and "environmental vandalism." They can fume all they want, but Australia's action, combined with Europe's floundering cap-and-trade program, signals that "mitigation" strategies-curbing greenhouse gases by putting economies on an energy diet-are not winning or workable.

On Friday, an unidentified police officer in Hometown, a suburb of Chicago, shot and killed a 14-month-old family dog in front of the dog's owner and the owner's 6-year-old daughter.

Killing a dog for doing what dogs do most certainly didn't have to be done. Firing the cop did, and Hometown's police chief, Charles Forsyth, did just that on Monday, calling the incident and aftermath an "emotional rollercoaster" for the family, the community, and the police department. A Justice for Apollo Facebook page garnered more than 10,000 likes since being created on Friday. ABC7 identified the police officer only as a 15-year-veteran of the force. Forsyth told me this morning he would not be releasing the name of the fired officer but also said there is no built-in arbitration or appeals process for the now ex-cop to turn to. He suggested the officer, like any employee fired by his employer, could launch a lawsuit if he wanted, but confirmed that the officer was no longer with the department and would not be drawing a pension.
