As a preface, sometimes it helps to have been "on the other side" when trying to determine what the unions' game plan is within the Obama Administration.

What you are about to read comes from having been on the other side and, quite frankly, putting two and two together. And, if you are not alarmed when you finish reading this, you should be, because there may be something much more sinister afoot at the Department of Labor than most people realize. There has been one sentence, more than others, in the Department of Labor's 160-page proposed rule change that indicates the DOL's expansion of the definition of 'persuader' to mean just about any vendor who has anything to do directly or indirectly with an employer's relationship with employees since activities may implicitly influence the decisions of employees with regard in the exercise of their rights in the workplace. Until now, however, one part of the sentence has been overlooked which, unless addressed, may cause individuals great harm-literally, physical harm.

Maybe you ate a handful of peanuts that you grabbed from your grocery store bulk bin. You sampled a few grapes from the produce aisle. Or perhaps you took a few gulps from a bottle of juice before adding it to your shopping cart. No big deal right?

The heated mixed response to the widely publicized arrest of Honolulu couple Marcin and Nicole Leszczynski last week over sandwiches they ate (but neglected to pay for) suggests it is actually a big deal. As the Associated Press reports, the couple's arrest, which led to child welfare officials taking away their 2-year-old daughter, has sparked a national debate. -- "If you want to eat it, you have to purchase it. It's not like Costco where you get free samples." - Gerard Viggayan, 34.

The modern two-income family is no better off than the one-income family from decades ago. Indeed, family finances are edging ever closer to disaster.

A major reason families are struggling: the increased size of government and governmental spending. Consider one small example from just one bureaucracy. In 1997, the Adoption and Safe Families Act promoted a new adoption policy to reduce the number of children stranded in foster care -- at a record high as a result of being "removed" from their parents under expanding definitions of "abuse."

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states, it is now illegal to record any on-duty police officer.

Even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists. The selection of "shooters" targeted for prosecution do, indeed, suggest a pattern of either reprisal or an attempt to intimidate.

To government, homeschooling resembles a weed that spreads and resists control. To homeschooling parents, it is the flowering of knowledge and values within children who have been abandoned or betrayed by public schools.

A great tension exists between the two perspectives. Homeschooling's continued growth has only heightened it. The federal government has reacted by attempting to increase its control over homeschooling, for example, by pushing for increased regulation of homeschool curricula. But the federal government is hindered by certain factors. For one thing, education is generally the prerogative of individual states. Nevertheless, the federal government can often impose its will by threatening to withhold federal funds from states that do not comply with its measures. But homeschooling parents cannot be threatened by a withdrawal of money they don't receive...

Describing the research that indicates GMOs are harmful to human health and the environment and should be labeled if they are going to be in our food supply. What are GMOs and should I be concerned about them in my food?

GMOs (or "genetically modified organisms") have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This science allows DNA material from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in Nature or result from traditional crossbreeding methods. Doing this provides financial benefits to biotechnology companies and large-scale farming corporations. For instance, seeds can be engineered to be insect resistant and/or herbicide tolerant. Produce can be developed that has a longer shelf life or is shaped to facilitate more efficient transportation. Scientists have even tried to introduce a cold-resisting gene from Arctic fish into tomatoes to prevent them from freezing and thus lengthen their growing season. Hand- in-hand with seed patenting, GE seeds can provide agribusiness with massive profits.

The parents of a 16-year-old suicidal boy spoke only with CBS Atlanta News' Wendy Saltzman after their son was gunned down by a police sniper in Cherokee County.

Lisa and Nick Messina said their son was killed at the hands of the officers they called for help. According to his parents, Andrew Messina had a bad day at school and the pressure was so overwhelming, he grabbed a gun and threatened to kill himself. Lisa Messina called the cops in desperation, hoping an officer would come talk to him. But what arrived was an army of deputies, an armored tank and a sniper.

A $5 million federal lawsuit filed this month in U.S. District Court in Abingdon accuses two Southwest Virginia law enforcement officers of shoving, punching and kicking an elderly man and woman during an incident that allegedly occurred last year.

Pennington Gap Police Officer Nathan A. Kennedy and Virginia State Police Trooper Wesley Williams are both named in the lawsuit, which was filed July 2 by Betty Slagle Minton, 78, and Emory Arnold Robinette, 74, of Pennington Gap. Minton and Robinette are seeking compensatory and punitive damages of $2.5 million each for acts of negligent conduct, grossly negligent conduct, and reckless conduct in which the two officers allegedly took part. The lawsuit requests that the case go before a jury.

Next time you stop at the pump and pay through-the-stratosphere prices to fill your car's tank, just ponder this: We are not - repeat, we are not running out of oil. There is no good reason you should be paying through the nose.

If you are also angry about illegal aliens pouring over the border, you should know that illegal immigration is the price we are paying to keep to keep gas prices from going even higher, maybe two or three times higher. More on that later. First, let's knock down the "oil is scarce" myth.
