These days, a few stubborn holdovers streak the sky and paddle the bay, but the legions are gone. The chicks have perished, and their bereft parents have returned to the sea.

Half of Iceland's seabirds nest on this low-lying volcanic outcropping and its neighboring islands in the deep west coast gash called Breidafjordur Bay. Flatey Island used to be covered with chicks snuggled inside rocky hillside burrows, under tall meadow grass, in nests strewn across headlands and shores.

One of the great moments in history came when an unsuspecting camper sandwiched a marshmallow and a piece of chocolate between two graham crackers -- creating an American masterpiece -- the s'more.

The U.S. Forest Service wants Americans to make healthier S'mores by replacing the chocolate with fruit, according to a blog post meant to commemorate National Roasted Marshmallow Day (apparently there is such a thing, it was observed on August 30 this year).

Residents of Mississippi with backyard bird feeders could run afoul of new state regulations that prohibit the "supplementary feeding" of wild animals.

The new rules appear to have been intended to limit the use of outdoor salt licks and other types of feeders designed for deer, but would apply to all animals, including birds.

The autopsy ruled the death a homicide.

East Point Police Department in Georgia has a very clear policy against tasers being used to "escort or prod" suspects or being used on handcuffed suspects, and this case is a very clear example of why. A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the family, including the 7 month old son, of 24 year old Gregory Towns, who died after being tased 13 times in 29 minutes. Two officers repeatedly shocked this man's body for a total of 47 seconds... while unarmed and handcuffed.

Vietnam has approved the importation of several genetically-modified (GM) corn varieties and left it to the environment ministry to decide whether to plant the controversial crops on a massive scale.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on August 11 authorized four corn varieties for food and animal feed processing-namely, MON 89034 and NK603 , produced by Dekalb Vietnam (a subsidiary of US mega-corporation Monsanto) and Bt 11 and MIR 162 from the Swiss firm Syngenta.

California could be becoming ground zero for radiation from the failed Fukushima plant in Japan. Ocean currents have sent tons of radioactive water into the Pacific daily from the crippled plant on the Pacific coast.

Radiation exposure results in a wide variety of health problems that include cancer. People have reported symptoms of radiation poisoning, yet California health officials stand by their stance that there is no serious risks to its citizens. The radioactive elements that are present in California are Iodine, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137, which stay in the environment for eight days, two years and 30 years, respectively.

The recent outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa is making headlines around the world, and generating a fair bit of international concern.

The deadly virus has claimed over 800 lives since March in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria, and is fatal in up to 90 percent of cases. Israeli researcher Dr. Leslie Lobel, however, is not sitting idly by. He has been studying the disease for many years and believes he is close to developing a cure. Ebola was first identified in 1976 in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). It starts off looking like a bad flu, but quickly progresses to vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding, according to the World Health Organization.

"We've heard a lot in the last number of weeks about what police officers can't do, and what police officers shouldn't do," groused Patrick Lynch, designated spokesliar for the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, New York's largest police union.

"No one's telling us what we are able to do, and what we should do, when we're faced with a situation where the person being placed under arrest says, 'I'm not going. I'm not being placed under arrest.'" "What is it we should do?" continued Lynch, his voice colored by theatrical incredulity. "Walk away?" If the would-be arrestee isn't involved in an actual crime - that is, an act of aggression against another person - the only morally suitable answer is: Yes. The cop should shut up, go away, and refrain from molesting one of his betters. The experience might encourage him to find honest work.

They did everything by the book. They had their CITES permits. They even disclosed to the officials that they were carrying instruments that featured antique ivory.

But Campbell Webster and Eryk Bean, both age 17, are nonetheless each without their vintage Robertson drones after they attempted to return home to Massachusetts after a successful weekend in Canada competing at the games Maxville and Montreal. Webster's 1936 silver and ivory Robertsons are not just vintage pipes, they are an heirloom instrument, played for many years by his father Gordon Webster, who was a pipe-major with the 1st and 2nd Battalion Scots Guards and served for many years as the official piper to Queen Elizabeth II.

In what would be the most significant water law passed in California in nearly 50 years, lawmakers in Sacramento are working with Gov. Jerry Brown on a landmark measure to regulate groundwater pumping for the first time.

The governor has made Pavley's legislation a top priority. But her bill, SB1168, is drawing opposition from the state's main farm organization. Each county could use a wide variety of tools, including setting up programs to recharge aquifers by putting more water in the ground, and requiring farmers -- some of whom don't have meters on their wells -- to carefully measure and report how much they pump, and maybe pump less. If local governments didn't set up oversight systems or failed to show progress, state officials could step in and write and enforce the local rules.
