Natural resource managers have begun winter monitoring of Arkansas caves to determine if a deadly fungus is present in some Arkansas bat populations. White-nose syndrome, is fatal to bats.

Biologists from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Ozark National Forest are working together in the cave rich northern region of the state where caving is a popular pastime. Winter time, is when it's easiest to detect and diagnose the disease.

Simply devastating - so much so that I wonder why it fell to an outfit like Slate to put it together.

Did the Times or WaPo not have enough of an inkling about NASA's discovery to survey naysayers before writing up their reports on the "discovery"? This information would have come in a lot handier when everyone was still paying attention to this story.

PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif. -- A mountain lion was spotted in Portola Valley late Wednesday night, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

The animal was seen at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Los Trancos and Alpine roads, according to the sheriff's office.

DOUGHERTY COUNTY - Killer bees are now in Georgia. Tests confirm Africanized honeybees attacked and killed a Dougherty County man last week.

"Obviously we think they came up from Florida, but the Africanized bee and the regular honey bee are very similar about the only way to do any positive ID is through DNA," said Bee Keeper Dale Richter. Tests came back positive.

BISMARCK, N.D. -- The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says the first mountain lion of the season has been killed, in Dunn County.

The 2- to 3-year-old adult female weighing about 85 pounds was shot Sept. 27 in the Killdeer Mountains. The mountain lion season runs through March 31.

We headed to the town of Missoula, on Highway 12 and then jumped onto 90. The landscape was a little disappointing in this area but once we got off the main highway and got onto route 287 things began to look more interesting.

We had heard of the bear attack in Cook City, NE of Yellowstone, where someone had been killed and a couple of others wounded by a mother grizzly whilst sleeping in a tent. Terrible. So when we had to sign a waiver of responsibility, as we paid for the campsite the reality of our new situation hit home. I am so used to hiking on my own and now I felt quite fearful to do so.

One of the finest wildlife viewing experiences in a national park is found at Elk Meadow in Redwood National and State Parks in Northern California. Roosevelt elk, the largest big game animal in North America, graze on the meadow that surrounds six former mill worker cabins that have been converted into luxury three-bedroom cabins for rent.
