New York City and Long Island began rationing Friday to ease a gasoline crisis from Hurricane Sandy that officials said could last two more weeks.

The new rules let cars fuel up only if the last number of the license plate matches the day's date - even-numbered license plates on even-numbered days and odd-numbered on odd days. Plates ending with a letter are considered odd-numbered. People filling up gas cans are not affected - nor are buses, taxis and emergency vehicles, officials said. New Jersey began gas rationing Saturday.

Amid growing concerns students are using medications such as Ritalin to boost performance, some British schools say they might consider drug tests before exams.

Discussions have been held on how to detect students using drugs that allegedly give them an advantage by helping them remain alert and focused, Cambridge University Professor Barbara Sahakian said. Drugs meant to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder are becoming increasingly popular with healthy people looking for an extra edge, she said.

A single junk-food meal - rich in saturated fat - is detrimental to the health of the arteries, researchers in Canada said.

Dr. Anil Nigam and colleagues at the University of Montreal-affiliated EPIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute, compared the effects of a junk-food meal and a typical Mediterranean meal on the vascular endothelium, the inner lining of the blood vessels. Endothelial function is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease.

During a power outage, an appliance thermometer is invaluable to test the temperature of food in the refrigerator and freezer, U.S. health officials said.

Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in case of a power outage, the appliance thermometers will indicate the temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer to help you determine if the food is safe - the freezer temperature should be at or below 0 degrees F and the refrigerator should be at 40 degrees F or below. If the power does go out, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is left unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours - or 24 hours if it is half full - if the door remains closed, officials said.

Many mountain lions in Nevada are migrating westward and moving into California, a finding scientists say is the reverse of what they expected.

Mountain lions can be hunted in Nevada but not in California, and wildlife researchers had thought more of the territorial predators would migrate east into Nevada to take advantage of big cat habitat made available when lions were killed by hunters. "We predicted we would have more lions coming in from California. We were surprised the Sierra [mountain range] itself was a net importer," Jon Beckmann of the Wildlife Conservation Society said.

Study participants were at least 40 years of age, did not have glaucoma and reported undergoing eye examinations from 1980 on for the nurses and from 1986 for the health professionals to 2008.

The use of herbicides in the production of three genetically modified crops has increased as "superweeds" are showing up, a U.S. researcher says.

A study by Washington State University scientist Charles Benbrook on the impacts of three genetically engineered herbicide-resistant crops - cotton, soybeans and corn - on herbicide usage found the emergence and spread of resistant weeds is strongly linked to the increased use of glyphosphate pesticides. Marketed as Roundup and under other trade names, glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds and is extensively used with crops that have been genetically modified to be herbicide resistant.

Many U.S. parents are unaware that 8 percent of kids have a food allergy and more than 15 percent of them have an allergic reaction at school, an expert says.

Dr. John "Drew" Bird, a pediatrician at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas who specializes in food allergies, said peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches - along with other lunchbox staples - could turn life-threatening for children with food allergies. Bird, who also is clinical director of the Food Allergy Center at Children's Medical Center Dallas, said in an allergic child just smelling or touching a food can trigger a reaction.
