Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the US. Most of these visitors come during the summer months, however. According to tourism officials, winter is an amazing time in the park.

Guests also enjoy lighter crowds during the winter months, which Yosemite officials say makes for a more personal experience. "Winter in Yosemite is completely different than summer. It's like a completely different park," said Kari Cobb, spokesperson for the park.

The Yosemite Fund and Yosemite Association, two of Yosemite National Park's major nonprofit groups, said they're forming a unified nonprofit to support projects and programs that preserve park resources and enrich the visitor experience.

The groups said they expect state approvals for the merger to take effect in January. Outwardly, the fund and association said, they'll operate as they are now until mid-year, while a transition to a consolidated organization occurs.

A Montana man has been cited for illegally taking a gray wolf after he shot one of the animals two days after the hunting season for the predators was shut down.

Game warden captain Mike Martin says the man had started hunting three days earlier -- and apparently did not know he'd done anything illegal until he called into the state's wolf hotline to report his kill. He then turned himself in.

Two years ago, an experienced hunter found what he believed to be mountain lion tracks in Boscawen. A game warden photographed the tracks, but the discovery did nothing to resolve the old questions:

Have the big cats returned to New Hampshire for the first time since 1885, when the last mountain lion in the state was killed in the White Mountains? And if the "ghosts of the woods" are really among us, are they most likely released pets, as state Fish and Game officials have long said?

What is going on with the cougars in Washington? By cougars I'm not referencing the Washington State Cougars, I'm referencing the wild animal type cougars.

A few weeks ago a cougar was trapped in Discovery Park, deep in the heart of the Seattle urban zone. That same day a cougar was killed by a car in Redmond. And now, also in Redmond, another cougar has been spotted, this time on the Microsoft campus.

Idaho -- After they were nearly wiped out in the lower 48 states, wolves in Idaho were declared endangered in 1974 under the Endangered Species Act.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 1987 recovery plan for wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains included reintroducing them in central Idaho in 1995 and 1996. Since then, Idaho has been involved in wolf management as directed by the Legislature. [Video Report]

Well, she may not be the newest or youngest in our local mountains, but she is the most recent cougar to be trapped, tagged and released by the National Park Service.

Park rangers with the Santa Monica National Recreation Area track the lions to study the effects of development on their habitat. As more open space is taken away, the less range each lion has to live within. Mountain lions tend to keep separate ranges and will fight to death over territory and food.
